Meet Alec Moody | Concert Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alec Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alec, what is the most important factor behind the success of your brand?
The most important factor to the success of my brand and any brand has been my willingness to take risks and put myself out there, especially in an industry that doesn’t always guarantee success or even a platform to show your work on.
At the beginning of my photography career, I mainly did sports photography for the local hockey team… concert photography was always a dream, but never seemed like it was feasible. I had done it a few times, but each time returning to sports photography due to a lack of belief in myself and the pandemic hitting and shutting most of the music scene down. One year after things finally started to open up again, I decided to take a risk and put more energy into concert photography, more than sports, and went to a few local bands’ shows and shot for them. I was welcomed with open arms by the community, bands, and photographers alike, and this dream that seemed that it was impossible became a reality I needed to make happen.
With all of that being said, the local music scene plays just as big of a role in my success for the sole reason of everyone giving me their encouragement in being able to succeed in the early days and the constant support they all give me throughout mine and their careers to this day. That’s what has given me the hope to continue in this difficult but beautiful industry and consequently, grow my brand to the level it is today.

Tell us about some of the hardships you have had to face to get to where you are today?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. However, like most artists, the overwhelming majority of my struggles stem from my own self-confidence in my work. When you are a self-taught photographer, who never took any photo or film classes in school, it can sometimes mess with my head and cause me to feel some serious imposter syndrome. That’s oftentimes when I have to reflect on my journey to this point and remind myself I have worked hard for the opportunities I have been given and that I am just as worthy as any other photographer in this industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As soon as they get off the plane, we’re driving straight downtown to, the best local taco chain, Taqueria 27. After we get stuffed with queso and tacos, we’d need someplace to shave the calories off… There’s no better spot for that and a breathtaking view, than Big Cottonwood Canyon. Another staple that HAS to happen, is a local show… preferably at Kilby Court. I love all of the histories of the local music scene that Kilby shines a light on.
Other than that, we’d obviously have to hit my favorite metaphysical shop, Dancing Cranes, and maybe catch a Utes game if it’s in season.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The few main people that deserve all the credit I could possibly give them are my grandparents, parents, and my mentor, Ken.
All of them have played major roles in my career. If it were not for them, I would simply not be where I am today especially when it comes to the success of my career. My Grandfather’s endless support specifically, went far enough to gift me my first digital camera, just because he had faith in me and wanted to see what I could do. My Grandfather has been my hype man since day one and has always supported me when I didn’t think it was possible. To my mentor Ken, who gave me constant advice about things I could have never seen coming myself in this industry. Ken has been a guardian angel since Day One. From meeting this random man that I happened to work with, to him being my mentor and giving me opportunities I never thought would be possible…
They both so much credit for who I have grown to be, especially when it comes to the level of confidence I have in myself and my career’s future.
