We had the good fortune of connecting with Brook Perdigon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brook, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I founded my company in 2015 with a handful of prints that I designed on the coffee table in my tiny little apartment in Los Feliz. I had been working as a textile designer for interior designers and then at Tai Ping Carpets for 10+ years and I was very eager to see what I could create from my own ideas. At that point in time, I would come home from work, put on a record, and sit and cut stencils for hours. I eventually hand silk screened these designs myself before having them professionally printed at our printer’s in Commerce, CA.  Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My intent with Brook Perdigon Textiles is to create a line of innovative textiles that offer something new yet familiar to the market. Each collection explores a new realm of design and together the line offers a wide range of designs that are able to bridge the gaps between traditional, contemporary and modern design.

Brook Perdigon Textiles has been in business for seven years and each year I seem to unearth some aspect of the business that I have not previously had experience in. Having a business is a bit like building a brick house. You work one layer and one brick at a time building your reputation, product, client base, and skill set step by step. Over the years, I have worked very closely with a business advisor who has guided me along the way. I have also been lucky enough to be a part of a welcoming community of other boutique textile lines – who not only share business ideas and best practices, but who are also incredibly supportive when the going gets tough.e

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooh playing tour guide is one of my favorite things to do! And since my best friend is an architect in NYC- a week long visit with her is right up my design alley.

Los Angeles’ food scene is the best in the country. Some must eat stops for visitors include brunch at Manuela; dinner at Damian downtown (it is literally the best!); drinks + bites at Melody Wine Bar with pop up chef/ dinner options changing weekly. To honor Jonathan Gold’s incredible legacy here- we would definitely go feast at Chef Tony in Arcadia. It is one of my favorites.

We would pepper the week with some design shopping and studio visits: Panopile in West Hollywood for vintage and artisan made home accessories; Katrina Hernandez’s new namesake studio shop in Santa Monica (by appointment only), Kneeland & Co. for textiles and art rarities, a visit with Jason Koharik at his studio in Glassell Park and a stop in ARCANA Books in Culver City for the best books in town.

Art & Design visits: The MAK Center in West Hollywood puts on exceptional shows in a wildly historically important space. Hauser & Wirth downtown has some of the best shows I have seen in a while.

Since the best part of living in LA is the mix of urban life with the great outdoors – we would hike in Ernest Debs Park for optimum views of the city. Afterwards, we would most likely have pizza + beer at Triple Beam in Echo Park then close out the day at Derby Dolls in Echo Park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The expression “It takes a village” rings so true here and I think dedicating my shout out to the outstanding artisans and manufacturers who create my product, as well as the ever inspiring Los Angeles design community that supports it is most appropriate.

I am also incredibly lucky to have a very dedicated team that holds me up and picks up the pieces of the day to day so I can move the company along.
