We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyson Lozensky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyson, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the ability to adapt to change and be versatile as things are constantly changing and evolving in technology and the industry in general. When I started out, I wanted to do Sound Design and make sound effects for movies and games, but I kept myself open to anything that came up, and ended up recording and mixing Orchestral Film Music. Not that you should say ‘Yes’ to everything that comes your way, but it helped me open my eyes to a whole other world within the same industry that I never really knew about.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been producing music under the name “ATC” for over 15 years so I already knew a bit about how to get around the programs and working with sounds, but when I was graduating from The Art Institute of California – Los Angeles, I had a teacher that introduced me to his friends that just built a studio. That was composers Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders who gave me a chance as their assistant straight out of school. I worked with them for over 12 years, and evolved from being the assistant and answering phones to being the main Recording and Mixing engineer for all of their film scores and projects. With them, I was lucky enough to receive 1 Primetime Emmy award and 2 Cinema Audio Society awards (CAS) for our work on films like Free Solo and Ford V Ferrari.
Since then I have branched out and became a fully freelance scoring mixer and engineer, working on over 86 projects like Prehistoric Planet on Apple TV, Frozen Planet II, Seven Worlds One Planet, Venom 2, A Quiet Place 1 and 2, and many more. I have expanded my client list as well to people I have met along the way, and continue to produce my own music on the side. Recently a song that I made with a friend of mine 10 years or so ago got placed in 2 different TV shows, so trying to make the leap into TV licensing as well as Video Game mixing is my next goal.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To be honest, when I have free time I just like to be in nature. I am very into gardening, and love the Forest and places like Ojai. I don’t go out much due to having young kids – but anytime I am not working or on my computer you will likely find me barefoot soaking up the sunshine somewhere.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say that a huge part of my success is thanks to my son Koda. I was a bit all over the place before he was born and not making the best decisions for myself and my future, but he helped me get my priorities straight and helped my career take off. I of course have had countless people along the way that have taught me things and helped me get to where I need to be, but it is all centered in a desire to make him proud and take care of my family.
