Meet Lucas Burtin | Illustrator and comics artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucas Burtin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucas, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was step by step that I created my own buisness. First I study in art school. Then I was doing a lot of fanzines. I took part to a zines festivals, exhibitions… It made me discovered the world of the comics. I published in 2021 my first graphic novel. This publication finally lead me to the field of the illustration.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to define my art between science fiction and sunday stroll. I love to insert misfit characters in architectural environments. I imagine them lost in the landscape. It was a lot of time to get where I am. First, nobody really care about I was doing and little by little I finished to be considered for my drawings. The harder is probably to continue to improve your skill while nobody really care about what you are doing. A lot of questionning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First of all I guess : The food. I now live in Lille in the north of France. You absolutly need to try the Welsh, It’s basically a slice of bread with beer covered with a lot of cheese. Very fatty but delicious during the cold winter’s evening. I would accompny the dinner with a pint of beer. So good. Then I guess I would go to Wazemmes market, on sunday, you can find a wide variety of food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve indeed never been alone. When I left school I create a small publication structure, ”Soleil d’hiver”, with Sun Bai. Then it’s with her that I published my first comics ”La plus belle plage du Nord”. For this first project we get lucky to meet Fidèle éditions, a french publishing house which supported our project.
