We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisa Sardo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marisa, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music and the guitar have always been a very important part of my life. I started playing when I was 4 years old, and for as long as I remember music has defined me. In high school, during difficult times, I found a creative outlet in music, and with my classical guitar, I gained strength. That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue an artistic career. Ever since, I have worked very hard for my career and am proud of my accomplishments!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The classical guitar is an extension of the self. When we play the guitar, we play with our entire bodies and souls. One can only be attracted to this incredibly personal instrument, and I developed a passion for its music from a very young age. My devotion brought me to complete my undergraduate work from Northwestern University and my graduate degree from Indiana University. I will also be receiving a postgraduate Performance Diploma from New England Conservatory in May 2023. Through dedication, passion and hard work, I have overcome and continue to overcome many challenges and obstacles. It is not easy being in an artistic field, especially during and after the pandemic. However, the realization of how much people all around the world crave art and music, especially during a time in which the world was deprived of them, makes the rewards of an artistic career meaningful, and aid in the advancement of humankind. I have been invited to perform on many stages worldwide, and I find aspiration and belonging in being able to share my music and communicate beyond speeches to many different cultures, languages, races, genders, ethnicities, and ages all around the world. By using the universal language of music, my narrative is purposeful. I am proud to have a unique, strong, feminine sound, for through this sound I feel I am able to give enrichment and grace to all peoples. I hope I can continue to share not only my brand but the important stories and lessons through my art. Thank you for the opportunity to share my art and the passion I hold for the classical guitar through this interview.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am originally from Chicago, and my family is from central Italy. So if I was showing a friend around Chicago, I would definitely take them to some of the most exciting parts of the city, such as Cloud Gate (the Bean), the Willis Tower, Millennium Park, museums like the Art Institute and the Planetarium, and of course my favorite, the Nutella Café! I would also bring them to some of the world-renowned musical places, like the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, one of the many live music clubs, and of course we would stop by my alma mater, Northwestern University, for a campus walk and an evening concert in the breathtaking Galvin Hall by Lake Michigan! If I was showing a friend around central Italy, I would take them to some of my favorite cities, such as Assisi, Siena, Perugia, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino, San Marino, and of course, the capital, Roma!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Where to start? A musician has a number of wonderful people to thank for their support: mentors like Adam Levin and Nathan Fischer, teachers like Eliot Fisk, Anne Waller, and Oscar Ghiglia just to name a few, friends, family and my fans, of course! No musicians can ever stand on their own. It takes a continuously growing village and I am forever grateful for all the support.
