We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikkie Myall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikkie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been in love with being tan! I started getting spray tans by a local artist in 2010, and loved the results but more importantly how it made me feel. Back in 2012, I wrote business plans to start a mobile spray tan business traveling to clients homes to tan. Life got in the way and I didn’t start pursuing my dreams until April of 2019 when I started getting tans again regularly. From there my vision for my brand grew. I wanted to create a luxury spray tan business that strayed away from the typical marketing of skinny women in bikinis, and showcase real bodies and fake, but natural looking tans. I want to keep people guessing is it real or is it a spray tan. It then grew into creating a safe all inclusive space for everyone. As you know spray tanning can be a vulnerable thing, because for most of my clients they are getting naked. When clients talk bad about their bodies or apologize for how they look I am always reminding them they are beautiful and our bodies take us on this journey in life. We need to be kinder to it and if we would never speak to our friends the way we speak to ourselves then we shouldn’t say it. It has now grown into something so much more than I could have imagined.
What should our readers know about your business?
In business I have the mindset that you are always a student, always learning and growing. I find myself always taking educational courses whether it be spray tan, or business related. I always learn something new or a better way to do things than I had done previously.
How I got to where I am business-wise has to do with my drive and passion for the sunless tanning industry. If I was doing this complimentary, I still would be in my same profession. I find myself excited, and have a deep love for the human connections I make with my clients.
What I want others to know about my story is it takes passion, and dedication. There will be sacrifices made, but in the end it will all be worth it. Find something you love to do, and put your heart and soul into it. The old quote says if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life and it’s true! Never stop chasing your dreams and surround yourself with positivity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
After picking them up we would hit up Amstrdm Coffee House + Piano bar for coffee and breakfast before exploring some of my favorite shops downtown; Ambiance, Wildflower Women Boutique, Pasolivo, Firefly, and the General Store. I would drive them to tasting rooms in Tin City such as Sans Liege and Levo before exploring out to wineries such as Rava for their sparkling wines. For lunch we would grab sushi from Goshi before heading to Cambria to search for sea glass. We will end for dinner at the Range in Santa Margarita before heading back to Paso Robles for a night cap at The Remedy for a mocktail/cocktail.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, and kids are the reasons why I have success. Without their sacrifice, and support Purely Golden would not be where it is. From arriving home at 10:30pm at night when our youngest baby was 4 months old to late nights in the studio they have stood beside me. It makes me happy when I hear my oldest child tell others about my job and you can hear how proud he is of me. My husband and I are like ships in the night, but we make it work! I manage my business and homeschool during the day. Then when he’s off work he takes care of dinner, and putting the kids to bed. We truly make the best team! I love you so much and thank you for believing in me.
I am also thankful for my sister, Heidi, who constantly believes in me and my vision for my brand. Whenever I doubt myself or need to lean on someone for advice I reach out to her for guidance. Thank you for always helping me, and being there for me!
