We had the good fortune of connecting with Giulia Asquino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Giulia, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has always been a present and constant part of my career and my life. Many times I didn’t even realize it, but when I tell my story, and I see people’s reactions to what I tell them, I understand that in reality, I have always taken many risks, consciously and not. Surely if I hadn’t taken the risk, I wouldn’t be where I am now, I wouldn’t have traveled half the world, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today, who despite all my flaws and insecurities, I have become much more aware of myself, of my qualities and of my worth. I think people take risks for various reasons, mine was to be myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing that comes up very often when I hear comments about my performances, from casting directors, producers, directors, or other actors, is that they describe my performances as genuine, and pure. And so, I think this is what distinguishes me. In the art of acting, I have found myself, and I deeply believe that acting is not ‘being someone else’, but having the possibility to be yourself. Thanks to a character, I can draw on various nuances of my character that Giulia may not be in real life, but which is still part of her. We all have various shades, we all have a dark side and a light side, and I find there is beauty in that, in human emotion, and I want the audience to be able, for that hour, hour and a half of film, give themself the opportunity to feel, and not to feel wrong.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For 5 months I’m now based in London, so I would take my friend for long walks through the historic streets of London, the Museum of Modern Art, a theater night in the West End, and certainly a dinner at the Goya restaurant in Mayfair. But in Los Angeles, I’d show her the coast, spend some wonderful sunny days by the sea, on the California beach savoring the fresh wind coming off the ocean. Hick the Hollywood Hills, and enjoy sunset views at Griffith Observatory.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Surely one of the people who stood by me the most and always supported and encouraged me to follow my instincts and take those risks was my mom. But there was also one film in particular that definitely opened my eyes to what I wanted to pursue in my life, and that’s ‘The Greatest Showman’. I remember the first time I saw it in the cinema I could feel the adrenaline flowing through my veins imagining myself on the set of a film like that, and from that moment I understood that everything I had learned as a dancer and singer was just a means to enrich my acting, and not an endpoint. Furthermore, I cannot fail to mention Alessandra Berton, my Strasberg technique coach, who has always encouraged and pushed me to keep going. And for almost two years now I’ve also had a number one fan, and love of my life, who encourages me to keep going and not give up. And I am so grateful to have these people in my life.
