We had the good fortune of connecting with Mahael “Shiva” Abdul-Qawi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mahael “Shiva”, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The balance began to change once I understood more what I was seeking out of life. What I mean by that is, once I knew in my heart that my main goal in this lifetime was to build and cultivate a healthy family, it really set everything else together in perfect place. I have 4 main priorities I’ve broken my purpose and life mission into and family is number 1. Everything else naturally fell into its respective priority of importance but as long as family was at the top everything else supported that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Something the world needs to understand about me is that I am very open and adaptable. Throughout my life I’ve always had this deep understanding that I was meant to contribute my services to the world whatever those services would eventually shape form as. And although I’ve struggled a long the way by allowing my ego to burn bridges and close doors, it was finally once I tamed my ego and aligned with that understanding of what my mission is supposed to be, did I start seeing opportunities manifest themselves.

Between cannabis, music, and political/self improvement work I’ve broken my mission, which is to provide the fuel that will uplift the people, into different categories that will not only be able to provide people with tools/information that they can take but the scope I plan on reaching in each respective field to one day, inshallah, create opportunities for others as well.

To even get to this point where I have clear understanding of each aspect of my mission felt like a long winding road of no light whatsoever. It wasn’t until I really begun to get out of my own way that I could come up with a long term game plan that would satisfy me in the short term but again long term would birth many fruits.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I think the major spots in LA kind of speak for themselves. The best hiking spots would definitely be around Griffith Observatory in my opinion. You could even finish a day at Griffith observatory for a nice experience of education and things to look at. There are Malibu and Santa Monica beach, both two very different experiences but nonetheless both nice.

Me, I live in Pasadena, so I would take them to see all the things Pasadena has to offer such as our own hiking trail, Eden Canyon beautiful views and high up in the mountains. There’s the main street with so many great food options to pick one is a crime. Maybe the rose bowl would be a nice way to finish, depending on the time of year the Rose parade would be a great thing to catch on vacation.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve given a few shout-outs since being asked to do my first interview back in 2019. This time around I think the only two people really worthy of giving a shout-out (and don’t worry there is a list but these two are special) are my beautiful wife and soon to be born baby boy, Zion. For reasons that could go on forever these two are my rock, my motivation, my reason, and my heart & soul.

Two books I would love to also give a shout-out to are the Holy Qur’an and the “Autobiography of Malcolm X”. Those two are the most important pieces of written work in my life.
