We had the good fortune of connecting with Jules Kuhr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a model and a creative director. It is unique in how I came to these things in that I was modeling, then dropped it to become a sound engineer. I took about 3 years of really focusing on engineering and came to realize this was a great time period in my life, but it wasn’t the end goal. It showed me the other side of the entertainment industry and really helped me understand how the professionals work. It gave me knowledge on the terminology and allowed me to observe before I tried stepping right in. I think those years behind the scenes allowed me to respect and understand all the work that goes in to create a finished product. Now that I am on the other side of it and getting back into my modeling, I see how to work with photographers and editors. I understand the process of getting a set ready and I appreciate all the work that goes into it. Not that I didn’t before, I just don’t think I was thinking about it in that way. I think my younger self was too concerned about being the right model , the best model, and I couldn’t get beside myself enough to realize the project is more than just who the model is. It’s about conveying the message, selling the product, and making the viewer feel something. This takes a whole team to put together. The model, the photographer, the stylist, the makeup artist, the hair stylist, the creative director, and more. It takes a whole village to put together a story.

Modeling is just one aspect of my work. I do hop on the other side of things and join the creative side, coming up with concepts and designs for photoshoots and videos. I work mainly with musical artists on this and I enjoy sitting down together coming up with ideas on how to turn their auditory story into a visual one. This kind of work pushes my creative mind and I’ve enjoyed opening my eyes up to try to see new things. I enjoy researching how other people are doing it and learning from them. I thoroughly enjoy learning and I don’t think I will ever want to stop.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take any visitors on some fun hikes at Griffith park or places just outside of the city like Antelope Cannon. We would pack some lunches, hike, then enjoy a nice picnic taking in the scenery. I also enjoy Pasadena and all it’s shops and restaurants, as well as the Huntington Gardens not too far away. Then we would hit the East side of La and go enjoy an evening bowling at a the Highland Park bowl. A cool, vintage feeling bar and bowling alley. I also enjoy the AMC in downtown Burbank and the little strip of bars and restaurants it has there. West Hollywood is great for super cool, unique places. Really you could pick any and do just fine. Then we would forsure hit up the beach. Either somewhere in Santa Monica or Malibu if we wanted something more remote, and enjoy a nice a sunset.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out the Coco Rocha Model camp. This organization has changed/influenced my life in some way and I am really thankful for it. Coco Rocha along with her team taught me so many amazing things and fully encouraged me to just be myself. And let go of all the judgments. This training gave me the knowledge to feel empowered as a woman, and model, and an entrepreneur.
