We had the good fortune of connecting with Tania Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tania, how do you think about risk?
I would consider myself a thoughtful risk taker! I typically make career moves that may not be the norm, but it doesn’t happen without a lot of research.
That said, I am also lucky to be comfortable with a chaotic schedule. Book a flight this afternoon as an opportunity comes up? Sure!
The unexpected things are the challenges I live for, and what brings a smile to my face 🙂
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art – the unexpected! I’m drawn the unexpected – in music, in conversation, in art. I want my work to show I’m thinking, I’m listening, and I’m loving my day.
Profession – whether it was backstage at Alexander McQueen, Victoria’s Secret, or doing a creative shoot with industry friends. My reputation as a solid human being is everything to me. I like to be inspired, and I like inspiring others. I try to offer attention and warmth regardless of others’ statis. Relationships not only open doors, but they give your day a sense of importance, regardless of what your working on.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
– Horses Restaurant – amazing food and service. It’s become a bit of an “it” place now so it’s hard to get in, but worth it!
– take bikes (or eBikes!) from Culver City to Playa del Ray along the Ballona Creek Bike Route. SO FUN! Completely separated from traffic and beautiful beach path to end!
– Catalina Island – spend the day strolling around on a bay – coffees, wine, snorkling. Golf cart exploring… it feels like you’re in a European island destination – but a day trip from LA!
– Getty Museum – Stunning building with gorgeous views of LA. Guests love this. Worth at least a half day to wander around and see the various rooms of works. The current show, the work of fashion photographer Tim Walker, is a must see!
– Arts District – so much here and one of the only walkable neighbourhoods. Amazing food, shopping and even an arcade bar that was so much fun!
– Venice Electric Light Parade – every Sunday at sundown. Takes about an hour on a bike or scooter and you see the best costumes and old Venice vibe!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Laurent Philippon
Laurent became my mentor in 2002 at my first New York Fashion Week show, and continues to be an inspiration to this day. He has brought out the discipline to my craft, while personally showing a level of curiosity and joy about life that is infectious.
