Meet Kirk Nishikawa | Co-Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirk Nishikawa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kirk, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Too many beers were consumed, a drunken promise was made and Brewyard Beer Company was born. Isn’t that how most children are brought into this world? 😛
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Brewyard Beer Company is probably one of the few 100% Asian / Filipino owned and operated breweries in the country. Brewyard is a craft brewery in a tucked-away converted warehouse with one simple mission: Redefine and rediscover the universe of Lagers. We brew beautiful lagers that offer strong flavor like an ale but still retain the light crisper finish of a lager. Originally this type of Lager had one champion, the California Common. We expanded this category of lagers to encompass dozens of flavors from Hoppy, Roasty, Smokey, Malty, fruity and Pale. Being of Filipino and Japanese heritage, we also enjoy experimenting heavily with Filipino ingredients and various Asian ingredients that we grew up with. We also like to dabble in Belgian Ales, Barrel aging and various other styles of beer that tickle our fancy at any given time. You can find our beers sprinkled around Southern California as well as the Dodger Stadium and Seafood Cities.
The open layout of the brewery & taproom was designed intentionally so you can see and follow the brewing process all the way from the milling of the grain down to the kegging out of the fermentation tanks full of Brewyard beer. If you catch us brewing or working the taproom, don’t be bashful. If you ask, we’ll probably give you an energetic impromptu tour of the brewery. We are happy to be here, working hard to make world class beer and to hang out with you all.
We have spent the past 7 years foregoing better paychecks to expand our operations to a level of production and quality that would allow us to share our beer with more than just our local neighborhood. We are finally at a level of production where we can start supplying both northern and southern California. This exciting news is why we wake up energized and optimistic for what is to come this year and the foreseeable future.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Southern California is the most amazing place in the world. Especially right now. Where else can you, on the same day, do the following: Snowboarding in Big Bear in the morning
Mountain Biking/hiking in Runyon Canyon before brunch.
Surfing in Malibu
Stop off at Disneyland for some fireworks.
Finish off late night at a club in Hollywood or a Brewery in Downtown.
That can be done in one day…
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To our family and friends that believed in us and supported us after we opened
