We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiaming Zhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jiaming, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
As an artist and architect, I have always cherished introducing my children to art by taking them to museums and art galleries. However, I have taken a hands-off approach, allowing them to explore and develop their artistic tastes without any influence from me or my personal opinions. Art is subjective, and there are no right or wrong answers regarding one’s preferences. Therefore, I encourage my children to trust their instincts and follow their own artistic inclinations. If they encounter a piece of art that doesn’t resonate, they move on to the next, knowing their genuine connection lies elsewhere. Witnessing the unique perspectives and interpretations they offer on the artworks they connect with is truly remarkable, and I take great pride in fostering their independent artistic journey.

As an architect working in the Historic Preservation area of New York City, I have been fortunate to engage with the rich history of the city’s old buildings. These structures hold a special allure for me with their distinct characteristics and unique features. Each building has its own story to tell, reflecting the lives of its past and present inhabitants and the meticulous care it has received over time. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the connection between buildings and their surroundings, making me more attuned to the sensory aspects of space. Every element influences my perception of space, from the scent in the air to the sound echoing through the corridors. This heightened sensitivity is what I aim to infuse into my art, creating pieces that not only capture the visual aesthetics but also evoke a visceral response in the audience. By incorporating the essence of historic buildings and their captivating histories, I strive to transport viewers into a realm where they can experience the space as I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots in the city is the Guggenheim Museum, a true architectural masterpiece. The building is a remarkable work of art that captivates me every time I visit. My ritual is to take the elevator to the top floor and begin my art journey by following the mesmerizing spiral ramp as it gracefully descends. This unique viewing experience sets the Guggenheim apart from any other art museum, allowing me to appreciate the art in a truly immersive and dynamic way. Amidst the art-filled adventure, I always stop at the small cafe on the second floor. It’s a hidden gem with an incredible view overlooking the lush expanse of Central Park. There, I find solace and take a much-needed break, relishing the moment while sipping my drink. The combination of art, architecture, and nature creates an enchanting ambiance that nourishes my senses and soul.
The Guggenheim Museum has become a haven for me, where I can escape into a world of artistic wonders while marveling at the brilliant design that houses them. It’s a testament to the power of architecture as art and its ability to enhance the experience of appreciating other forms of artistic expression. Each visit to the Guggenheim is a source of inspiration and renewal, reminding me of the boundless creativity and beauty that exists in the world.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
During my Master of Architecture program at Pratt Institute, I had the privilege of being under the guidance of Peter Macapia, a remarkable professor and artist. Peter’s unique ability to merge the worlds of architecture and art inspired me in profound ways. His teachings and mentorship showed me that architecture is not merely a technical discipline but a platform for artistic expression. Through his guidance, I learned to appreciate the intricate balance between aesthetics and engineering, realizing that the beauty of manufactured structures lies in their ability to harmonize both elements. Peter encouraged me to explore the world with a deeper understanding and reorganize it creatively. His teachings expanded my architectural knowledge and instilled in me a sense of curiosity and an eagerness to explore new possibilities. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to learn from Peter Macapia, and his influence will undoubtedly continue to shape my artistic and architectural pursuits for years to come.
