Meet Taryn Segal | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Taryn Segal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taryn, how do you think about risk?
My risks feel less like risks and more like things I have do. Asking anyone I don’t know personally to take their photo is putting myself on the spot.. They could say no, but what if they say yes? You have to be equally prepared for Yes’s and No’s. Everyone talks about the rejection in the art world. All the no’s, the radio silence, and not letting your hopes get too high. Pacing yourself and developing thick skin is a definite requirement for a creative career, but I think it needs to be highlighted how crucial it is to not rule out the chance that things do go your way. Okay, you got the yes. Are you prepared for it? Are you able to stay in the room you took a gamble to get into? Do you have the confidence to communicate your idea to someone who not only can make it happen, but get them just as excited as you are? You should be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art will always be documentation. I am watching, I’m taking notes on how you move through the world as I move through it with you. I have so many ideas, I am so inspired by everyday life and how people look when they have a moment alone to themselves. I’m attracted to signs of life. I will go up and talk to a stranger for the sake of art. Life’s good even when it isn’t.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place to eat and gossip is at Figaro during their happy hour. Sitting outside at one of their little blue tables is a must for the people watching experience while you sit back and eat fries and drink something fizzy. It’s the runway of Los Feliz, some people will pass by very dressed up to run errands or walk their dogs. The is is my eating of a hot dog at a ballgame.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank the people that decorate my everyday life. Thank you to my close friends who know me so well. Thank you to anyone who says yes to my ideas.
