We had the good fortune of connecting with Thiago DaDalt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thiago, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been drawn to art and creativity because it allows me to express myself and tell stories in unique and impactful ways. From a young age, I felt a deep passion for exploring the human condition, addressing social issues, and giving a voice to those often unheard. Movies hold incredible power—they can create empathy, challenge perspectives, and inspire meaningful change. My genuine passion for storytelling was nurtured in my hometown of Rio Novo, Brazil. There, amidst the beauty of nature and the simplicity of people’s lives, I grew up in a humble family surrounded by diverse animals and birds, free and out of my comfort zone.
Within my own family, I had the privilege of growing up with two diagnosed schizophrenic relatives, my aunt Gilda and my uncle Miguel. They were extraordinary individuals who showed me the beauty of inclusion, diversity, and acceptance. Society’s treatment of them made me aware of the importance of embracing those often labeled as “different” or “weirdos” by society. They were never such; they were simply unique individuals with their own perspectives and experiences. I fervently wish that more people had grown up with similar understandings. We wouldn’t still be grappling with fundamental human rights in 2023.
My passion for storytelling was further ignited by my older sister Claudia, who introduced me to American films at a young age. At seven years old, I couldn’t read the subtitles on my own, but Claudia patiently read them aloud to me, helping me grasp the captivating narratives unfolding on screen; the visual frames, costumes, mesmerizing cinematography, and storytelling. I vividly remember watching “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” and feeling profound intrigue. Films such as Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “A Clockwork Orange” significantly fueled my desire to create my own cinematic works.
As a teenager, I immersed myself in cinema, watching three movies daily—an obsession that occasionally frustrated my father, who hoped I would spend more time playing outdoors.
Around twelve, a history teacher named Nelcilia Xavier encouraged me to write and direct VHS short films exploring themes like “Drugs in Adolescence” and “Teenage Pregnancy.” Despite my limited understanding of these subjects then, I knew deep down that this was my calling. Soon after, this same teacher challenged me to write and direct theater plays during high school, an endeavor I embraced wholeheartedly with my fellow students. When I turned seventeen, I relocated to São Paulo, where I began working for a TV commercial production company—it was like “college” for me, as I had never attended film school. I was always watching these professionals working and learning all in the making, and it was very inspiring. I started as an assistant editor and quickly became an assistant director, collaborating with around twelve different directors before eventually directing TV commercials. Yet, my true passion resided in the realm of film, ultimately leading me to embark on a new chapter of my life, coming to the United States. In September 2013, I decided to move to Los Angeles, where I have resided ever since.
The transformative power of films has guided me throughout this fulfilling and inspiring journey. None of it would have been possible without the support and assistance of countless individuals, like Dru Miller (executive producer of all my projects in the USA), Dawnella Trammell, Giselle Claudino, Marcos Daniel, Bruna Nogueira, Damaris Pinheiro, Manu Maciel, João Bounassar, Laura Townsley, Al Sgro, Gabriel Dib, Ricardo Ariel, Ekin Ergen, Kirk Moody, Tamara Mark, and many others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One aspect of my art that I am particularly proud of is the ability to tackle sensitive subjects with honesty and authenticity. Whether delving into the impact of early-onset Alzheimer’s or shedding light on the complexities of severe autism, I aim to create narratives that resonate with audiences on a deep emotional level. Getting to where I am today professionally has been a journey filled with challenges and growth. It certainly hasn’t been easy, but perseverance and dedication are key to overcoming obstacles. I have faced moments of self-doubt and encountered roadblocks along the way, but I have learned to view these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
Throughout my artistic career, I have learned valuable lessons about the power of collaboration, the importance of staying true to my creative vision, and the significance of embracing failure as a stepping stone toward success. Each project and experience has shaped me as an artist and propelled me forward.
I am driven by a genuine desire to make a positive impact through my art. I am dedicated to using storytelling as a catalyst for change and to bring awareness to social issues that deserve attention. Through my work, I aim to foster empathy, encourage dialogue, and inspire others to question and challenge the status quo.
I hope my art resonates with audiences, sparks meaningful conversations, and encourages a more inclusive and compassionate society. I want to leave a lasting impact through the stories I tell, and I am honored to have the opportunity to share my unique perspective with the world through www.dellenmillerproductoons.com, which shares the same values.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Los Angeles is a treasure trove of incredible places waiting to be discovered, and I am constantly uncovering new gems each day. Exploring the city on my bike, visiting charming coffee shops, and indulging in the experience of watching movies in beautiful theaters are some activities that inspire and invigorate me. I enjoy hiking at Runyon Canyon and witnessing the breathtaking sunsets at Santa Monica or any other beach in Los Angeles. Always something to explore in L.A.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Despite their limited knowledge of my art, my parents, Lourdes and Pedro, in Brazil, have always cherished and encouraged me from afar to pursue my dreams. Although I lost my father twelve years ago, I am confident he is happy as he watches me pursue my passion. Their unwavering support keeps me motivated and determined to forge ahead. When I began my journey in the USA, Dru Miller stood by my side. Even though my English skills were initially poor, she remained steadfast and offered invaluable assistance. She could have chosen any other filmmaker, but we ended up together, navigating through the years and working on impactful projects that have touched countless lives. Dru, I deeply appreciate and love you.

Our personal journeys are shaped by the people who surround us. Many individuals have provided immense help throughout my lifetime, and I hope they are aware of the profound impact they have had on me. To name a few, Dawnella Trammell, Giselle Claudino, Marcos Daniel, Bruna Nogueira, Damaris Pinheiro, Manu Maciel, João Bounassar, Laura Townsley, Al Sgro, Ricardo Ariel, Ekin Ergen, Tamara Mark, and many others.
