We had the good fortune of connecting with KHULULA Production and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KHULULA, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is an ingredient for success. Actually one of the most important ingredients, the salt, you can say. Every decision we make as entrepreneurs contains a healthy/unhealthy amount of risk. Healthy/unhealthy is subjective to the type and scale of your business so it is important to know where you’re at and what the next goal is. Every level we stepped up to was catapulted by some form of risk, either taken by us or by our clients or even by people that recommend us. I can’t at this moment think of any financial move riskier than producing a movie. Short or feature, even worse for short, because there are less ways to monetize it to recoup costs, and its harder to market because, hey, it’s only less than half of a film. But deciding to rake risks like that, opens doors of possibilities that you can only identify if you did it. When we decided to shoot Energy Never Dies, we had very little money, not a lot of resources and a twenty five minute script. We started shooting not knowing if what we had would be enough to finish the film, but along the way, the resources came. We also weren’t sure if or how we would make the money back but we forged ahead and now, we are making income from cool merchandise we created to market the film. It initially wasn’t even meant for sale, it was just for the team but people seemed to like it so much.
Now, I know we sound crazy, diving into these decisions without calculating the risk involved but we would have never discovered what we know now if we waited to know it all before starting. Most times, the best way to learn is by just taking that risk. Whether it turns out good or bad, it’s growth.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Energy Never Dies (E.N.D.) is the story of 3 young people battling through societal and familial pressures to be people they are not. That’s almost everyone these days right? We’re all having similar experiences in different parts of the planet, just happening in different situations. Michael, Deborah and Ganga are from completely different cultures and walks of life, living different situations but all experiencing the same thing, the battle for freedom. So, I guess what makes this movie so special is the fact that it can touch one and many all at once. That’s what we’re most proud about. Also, because we incorporated Bollywood, Hollywood and Nollywood in the same film. How’s that for sharing the spotlight? There were definitely a lot of challenges along the way, from pre to post production. We couldn’t even premiere it till 3 years after because we ran out of resources. I can’t say we did anything to overcome the many challenges but there was something we didn’t do, lose hope/give up. That’s the biggest lesson I learned. Once you’ve started, the only way is forward. The journey only stops when YOU STOP.
I want the world to know that KHULULA was built on diversity and inclusion. We’re not here to take the spotlight from Hollywood, we’re just here to make the spotlight bigger, to house more countries, cultures and social groups.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place to go is Universal City. There’s a lot to do there and a great place to meet a lot of people. There’s great Bruch spots in Hollywood and the walk of Fame is great for photos. Rodeo drive is perfect for a splash of luxury and Tao/The highlight room has amazing nightlife.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge shoutout goes the founder of KHULULA, a visionary, Timi Oyelude, who started the company years ago with faith and the company’s strong core values. Also the Co-Director of Energy Never Dies (E.N.D.). A special shoutout to his now partner, Juju Okechukwu who has been a big force in the growth of the company since she joined and Co-Director of E.N.D. Tobi Oyelude, an executive producer on the project and a great asset to the team.
The entire KHULULA team, the cast and crew of E.N.D. all deserve a shoutout. They put their all into this and we are all family.
