Meet Trey Everett | Playwright, Author, Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Everett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trey, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk has such a negative connotation in the zeitgeist. Especially when it comes to pursuing a life as an artist. When I think about risk, I try to broaden the definition by simply thinking about following the impulse. As an artist, I think inspiration hits suddenly, and intensely. Whether it be a new book idea, a new play idea, a new song idea, whatever the inspiration brings, it comes unexpectedly. Choosing to listen to that impulse, and really lean in, to me, is choosing risk.
We will never know the outcome of the risk we pursue as artists, but I truly think if we listen to the impulse, we will find our own version of success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think something that makes me feel proud and unique as an artist is that I really try to be fearless in the pursuit of different types of art. My second novel is set to release this September (9/21/23), while I just release my second EP of original music, and I am currently working on finishing another play. I really love that I so wholly put myself into various types of art. It really helps me feel fulfilled in the pursuit.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone was visiting Los Angeles for a week, here are my top recommendations: Figaro’s for breakfast / brunch. It’s one of my favorite spots in Los Feliz. It’s such a beautiful, walkable area, and their staff is also super kind. Maru for a post-brunch, coffee, pick-me-up. Again, in Los Feliz, their coffee is incredible, and their team is awesome. Uovo for dinner. Quite literally the best pasta in all of Los Angeles. I’d make sure they caught a show at Largo; anything from Living at Largo with Pete Holmes, or the Watkins Family Hour. I’d also make sure they planned their week trip to be able to grab drinks at Gold Digger’s in Hollywood to catch Mike VIola’s monthly residency show.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In terms of wanting to shout people out in playing a hand in success I feel I’ve achieved, a few people come to mind. Namely two groups. The first: Brian Johnson and Callie Prendiville-Johnson; co-Artistic Directors of the Electric Company Theatre in Orange County, CA. They are dear friends, and have been constant sources of encouragement and inspiration. Any success I achieve will in part be due to their support. Check them out at: https://www.electriccompanytheatre.org. The second: Wesley Chavez and Andrew Border of the Orange County / Los Angeles based band, Moonlight Graham. A band in which I play drums. They are both consistently supportive of me as an artist in the context of our indie folk band, but also in the context of me as an individual artist. Stream our music on Spotify!
