We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Glassell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrett, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I believe that a habit that has helped me succeed is keeping myself accountable. Whenever someone is trying to accomplish a big endeavor it’s very easy to come up with excuses or blame your lack of improvement on other variables. By keeping myself accountable it has encouraged me to take control over what I do and to plan ahead thoroughly. If I’m behind on something the only person to blame is myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It has been a lot of trial and error to get where I am today. My passion for filmmaking has continued to grow over this time and I am currently the most proud of my upcoming movie, ‘Kade’. I spent a lot of time making short films throughout my last few years of high school and beginning of college. A challenge that I think most creatives tend to get is having a big idea and not being able to make it due to the lack of resources. I often found myself coming up with these big blockbuster movie ideas and then after getting really excited I would get smacked across the face with reality. I don’t have millions of dollars to make the movie I want to make. Although, it was disappointing, pushed me to become even more creative. I first had to condense my ideas into a more affordable movie that I could make. This is where I made a lot of short films that weren’t particularly good, but allowed me to develop good relationships and better my craft as a filmmaker. As I mentioned before I am most excited for my new movie ‘Kade’. This is my first project where I feel like I was able to really tackle that big idea. Now I still don’t have millions of dollars, but as a filmmaker I knew I needed to tackle this if I were to step up my game. This provoked more challenges, which forced me to give the perspective of a big movie even though the resources behind it were pretty small. We have finally finished production and as I edit the movie I am very pleased to see that I was able to accomplish my vision. My goal with this movie is for it to be a launching point for my future projects. I hope this movie will allow for bigger companies with more reach to take me seriously and allow me to work with them. This way I can achieve my dream of creating big movies with big ideas for a big audience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to the beach. California is known for its great weather and the beach is the perfect place to have fun and enjoy it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been many people that have helped me get to where I am today. To keep the list somewhat concise I’ll mention a few key people in my filmmaking career. Michelle Vaculik, Dylan West, Christopher Yerikian, Joey Chase, and Liam S. Terlecki
