We had the good fortune of connecting with Jená, Nyah, Scott, Rachelle Bhone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jená, Nyah, Scott, Rachelle, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Our business “Burnt Umber Coffee ft. Petals & Poison Tea Room” came from our family’s love for coffee and tea culture. Our parents have always ran home businesses, so it made sense to create a family business that combined all of our interests. The name “Burnt Umber” came about because it is the color of both coffee and tea. “Petals & Poison” is our sister brand. They are known for their Small Batch Tea Blends, Tea accessories, Nu Antiques, and Gothic Victorian aesthetic. Their name came from the idea that the brand is both Gothic Victorian, but also Romantic.

What should our readers know about your business?
Burnt Umber is a family owned and operated specialty coffee shop, featuring local roasts and our Petals & Poison curated tea room . Here, coffee and tea culture collide in a Gothic Victorian aesthetic. We offer a one-of-kind experience (with photo opportunities) for each.

We have always had a huge love for each other, people, and our craft. Small businesses always come with hurdles, but together we are stronger. We have been able to get over creative differences, difficulties outside of our control, and have come together to create something totally unique. The biggest learning experience for us was to trust that God will help us, to communicate, and to meet with level heads. It’s extremely easy to get underneath each others skin because we are family, so coming together with grace and understanding has been huge for us.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We may seem a little vain for this, but we would absolutely want our friends to visit our shop to eat, drink, visit, and hang out!

But other than visiting “Burnt Umber”, we’d absolutely recommend Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland for more of a local visit. But if they wanted to travel to other cities in SoCal, we would recommend visiting Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach, Eclipsed Emporium in Long Beach, and our family favorite coffee shop, Work In Progress, in Costa Mesa.

We grew up in Costa Mesa and their coffee scene is amazing! They also have a ton of interesting small shops at The LAB: Anti-Mall, as well as The Camp.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This Coffee House & Tea Room would not exist without the selfless love and sacrificial efforts of John & Rowena O’Leary.
