Meet Knial Saunders | Writer | Director | Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Knial Saunders and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Knial, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Sure as hell isn’t for the money.

For me, this has always been about the freedom of expression and exploration of the human condition. If I look back into my childhood I can see the shape of a burgeoning artist. I was writing (angsty) music and poetry back then. But I felt seen. And I felt heard.

So I followed that thread into different capacities – poetry, painting, music, entertainment journalism, photography. All of which led me to film. The ability to create, capture, and share one’s perspective in a format which the entire world pays attention to.

I believe that as artists we have a responsibility to create art which speaks to the human experience. In that way I believe that we are mirrors reflecting the societies around us. Beyond that, I have found that the arts offers a unique opportunity to connect with individuals with whom you may never otherwise find common ground. At days end, we are united in art.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that what sets us apart and makes us unique is what makes us strong as artists. But it takes time to understand that the break from homogeneity is in your best interest. Along that vein, I am most proud of myself for being the kind of artist willing to break from convention and take risks in my work.

My film, Solitude, experiments with non linear storytelling, visual metaphors, and pacing in ways that are unconventional but unique. It follows the relationships of a Black family as they face uncomfortable truths about themselves and each other. And because my work often explores themes of humanism, multicultural identity, sexuality, and religion that affords a certain level of flexibility for fluid storytelling.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still learning of LA’s infinite and varied pockets so forgive me if I miss a SoCal staple. But here’s my list:

– The Grove & Original Farmer’s Market
– The Last Bookstore
– Griffith Observatory
– Hollywood Walk of Fame
– Main Street in Santa Monica
– Malibu

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I have met along this journey who have taught me so many things – knowingly and unknowingly. I am constantly learning and leaning on the experience of others who have gone before me. All my mentors going back to Katie Stern, Larry Cook, Idit Dvir, Richard Davis, Kelley Kali, etc. There are truly too many to list but these Individuals listed are tremendous people who have inspired and elevated me throughout my career.
