We had the good fortune of connecting with Tuesday Hammerl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tuesday, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always wanted to have a retail store of my own to create a contribution to the gothic community. I’m a long-time member of the gothic subculture which is where I get most of my influence. The culture is thriving again with new music and events. So many are curious. Eclipsed Emporium was created as a place to go and hang out as well as shop and try new styles. It is amazing to help people focus their style or add to what they already own. When I first moved to Los Angeles in the 90’s we had Melrose avenue and a host of satellite stores to shop from. We would make a day out of going to Melrose and enjoying seeing like minded people.
Online shopping seems to be the dominant source for alternative shopping. Eclipsed Emporium was created out of a lack of physical retail stores for dark alternative clothing. We wanted to offer a place to play and experience clothing before purchasing. Yes, we do have a website for those who are not local. It it is my goal to make the physical store the dominate source to shop our wares. ALSO, we are a new and used reseller of darkly inclined clothing and accessories. This means even if you can’t afford something you want there is always the option to trade in your vintage for store credit.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Originally, I moved to Los Angeles to go to design school. Unfortunately, my resources we not sufficient to be able to continue thru completion. I left design school to go into working for production as a hair/makeup artist. I spent over 2 decades doing hair and makeup. I am fortunate to have been as focused as I was and I am truly grateful for all the experiences I had as well as the people I worked with. Fashion and retail was always my dream. I was able to retire from production to focus on my family and open Eclipsed Emporium.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would keep them local to So Cal. We would have dinner at the 4th horsemen (gothic pizza) and then hit one of our many nightclubs available in LA.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to recognize Dave and Jenn Bats of Release The Bats. Release The Bats is a long running gothic club out of Long Beach, CA and now they have a radio show. Twitch.com/releasethebatsclub on Thursday 11am. Dave and Jenn are a huge driving force in our scene. Love THEM!
