We had the good fortune of connecting with David Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of El Compadre Restaurant lies in the convergence of several key elements that have allowed our family-run brand to flourish and leave a lasting mark on the culinary landscape in one of the greatest cities in the world, Los Angeles.

First and foremost, our dedication to preserving the authentic essence of Mexican cuisine has been paramount. From day one in 1975, we made a commitment to serve traditional dishes that capture the vibrant flavors and cultural richness of Mexico. Our recipes have been passed down through generations, and we take great pride in maintaining the integrity of our culinary heritage. We also introduced the famous and award winning, Flaming Margarita, to the world and that’s been part of our driving force to success.

Equally crucial has been our unwavering commitment to providing unparalleled hospitality to our guests. At El Compadre, we treat everyone who walks through our doors like family. The warm smiles, genuine care, and personalized attention create an inviting and welcoming atmosphere, making each visit a memorable experience. Our customers know they can count on not just a fantastic meal but a sense of belonging that keeps them coming back time and time again.

In the ever-changing world of the restaurant industry, consistency is key. We have strived to maintain the same high standards in every aspect of our operations over the years. Whether it’s the quality of ingredients, the taste of our dishes, or the friendly service, our customers know they can rely on El Compadre to deliver an exceptional experience, just like they did back in 1975.

Additionally, the success of El Compadre Restaurant can be attributed to our strong connection to the community. We actively engage with our customers before every Dodger home game in our Echo Park location. Or have a fun party on special days like on Cinco de Mayo in our Hollywood location. We try our very best to embrace our role as an integral part of our neighborhood. We have earned the trust and loyalty of our patrons, who see us not just as a restaurant but as a cherished member of their community. We love and thank you LA!!!

Lastly, but certainly not least, humor plays a role in our success too! Our team knows that a little laughter can brighten anyone’s day, and we love to share smiles and light-hearted moments with our guests. It adds a unique touch to the dining experience, creating a welcoming and enjoyable ambiance that sets us apart from other restaurants.

In summary, the most important factor behind the success of El Compadre Restaurant is the seamless blend of authentic Mexican flavors, genuine hospitality, unwavering consistency, community engagement, and a sprinkle of humor that has captured the hearts and taste buds of our cherished patrons for almost half a century. We take pride in our heritage, and it is our customers continued support and enthusiasm that motivate us to keep sharing the joy of Mexican cuisine and culture with the world.

What should our readers know about your business?
Always maintaining your humility is key. I’m a firm believer that everything can be gone in an instant. Don’t allow yourself to be indulged into the hype of wanting to belong. The only thing that stays on this earth are stories about you and your impression on people that ultimately define your legacy. Make that your driving force to success and the fortune will come along with it. And what I mean in fortune is ultimately anything they need abundance of. It can be money, or family love or fame. Who knows what a person seeks to be happy within themselves. Treat every human being with respect and love everything even if it dosen’t deserve to be loved. Sometimes people just need to hear that somebody or something loves them. That’s my Beetles influence speaking out. Lol.

The only lesson I’ve learned at this point of my life is to never stop the ability of WANTING to learn. The thirst and hunger of informative and useful information completes me. The world is full of amazing lessons and so much knowledge out there. Any chance i get I always try to incorporate learning into my daily life. i guess you can say I’m a nerd but ive always loved to learn anything new. Its helped me build lasting relationships with others and build a strong network of diverse groups of people because I actually genuinely care for others advice, stories and life lessons of what they’ve been through in their journey on this earth. You can never know when you might need help with in the future whether it be professionally or personally. I’ve been blessed to meet some very influential people along the way that have helped shape the world that we know today. Musically, my idol Pharrell Williams. My favorite actor Tom Hanks. My favorite film director Quentin Tarentino. Favorite comedians in Don Rickles and Will Farrell. There’s so many more I can keep naming but I know the universe brings them face to face to me so I can ask them for more inspiration and advice on life. What better way to talk to your childhood idols instead of asking for a picture or autograph. Ask them what drove them to be in the position they are at today and the most important question I always ask is if they are happy or not. All I can say after those encounters is that it hasn’t stopped me from trying to achieve my goals in life. My favorite quote of all time is “Wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket”. i guess you can say thats my go to if I had to describe myself in one line.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite spots to venture to in LA. Hmmm… so many to choose from. A Laker game is on the top of my list. Growing up being spoiled watching Kobe and Shaq forever changed my view on sports. i always love a quick game of golf at the Arroyo Seco Par 3 coarse in South Pasadena.

Best places to eat are El Compadre of course. In-n-out burger. Portos bakery. Anywhere they have amazing Ruben sandwiches. You can’t go wrong with a bean burrito from Taco Bell.

Best taco truck in my opinion is California Tacos in Pasadena. They been in biz since the 70’s I believe. It’s one of the 1st taco trucks in all of LA according to the story in front of their truck. Family run and operated as well.

Favorite places to have a drink are El Compadre, duh! Shortstop Bar in Echo Park, Blind Barber in Highland Park. i try to keep it to a minimum on venturing to bars. When you grow up around one it sort of loses its allure for others. Just my opinion.

My go to happy place lately has been The Woods in WeHo. It’s a cannabis lounge where they have mocktails and actual flower so you can consume on premise. I honestly have met some very interesting people there. And it being so close by the restaurant in Hollywood it makes it a great spot to quietly sit back and work on emails or any task.

And then for some relaxation you can’t go wrong with Paradise Cove in Malibu. i mean you got a great restaurant that allows you to take your food and drinks onto the beach. You can’t go wrong!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, where do i start. My father David Castro Sr. (who we recently lost in early May of this year) was one of the best teachers when it came to work ethic and guidance. He gave me the courage to come out of my shell when I was a kid. I grew up being very introverted, shy, and anxious. He threw me out to the wolves in a choatic but fun setting of El Compadre Hollywood when i was only 12 years old. From there i didn’t look back. The restaurant has pretty much been my entire life.

From there I had the pleasure in meeting and working alongside my fathers business partner(s) / entire family. Mario Jimenez Sr and three of his sons Cesar, Mario, Joey and two daughters Violet & Paula Jimenez who would become a vital part of my life from that point on. Cesar, Joey, & Mario helped mold me to the businessman and partner i am today. We took our father’s legacy to the next level by always taking me under their wing and allowing me to collaborate on ideas on how to bring the company into the future. I was never judged by them by my age (almost a 20 year difference) and they believed in me when I mentioned that I wanted to further my studies and work experience in achieving my Hospitality Degree in Le Cordón Bleu of Pasadena to become an important asset to the company. They helped support my dreams and ambitions. After that there was no looking back. Violet has been a supporting force. She was there for me when I suffered from my mental health issues and continues to be a guiding light for me. Always encouraging me to endure any obstacle that falls in the middle of my road ahead. Without this entire collaboration of individuals, El Compadre wouldn’t be where it is today.

A special shoutout to my business partner Dustyn Jimenez (Cesar’s son). Our future is bright and what we are bringing to the table for our families is going to leave a lasting mark on the food and beverage industry. I can’t wait till we launch what we promised for our families. LA be prepared! Big things are coming!

Lastly, it’s our entire team. From the kitchen staff. Front of house. Vendors. Even down to the community of Los Angeles that have helped mold me to what I am today. i want to thank all of them.
