We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After having a personal experience with domestic violence, I realized the majority of woman would not have a fighting chance in such a situation. With further research we realized the severity of the epidemic of violence on woman, and look to offer a solution for others who are at risk of experiencing the same or worst.

What should our readers know about your business?
With MMAM we are providing a service for woman by woman. Many other services in this industry are for profit or run by men. We set out to change the whole dynamic of how we train woman in martial arts; by creating a safe place for abused woman to come train and introduce empowerment back into their lives. We host woman seminars, that introduces local woman entrepreneurs as vendors, along side our all woman’s self defense course.

This journey has not been easy, I recommend to other entrepreneurs to never give up, push through the difficult and especially during times of perceived failure. It’s all a recipe for being better at what your heart is set out to do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d start off fueling up for breakfast at Nata’s Bakery in Sherman Oaks. Definitely take them to the next woman’s open mat being hosted in LA. Take a drive up the PCH to Santa Barbara for some beach fun. At some point go for some dinner at Shiraz Restaurant in Sherman Oaks or Marstons in Santa Clarita.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My inspiration stems from all the woman who’s voices are no longer heard. Gone due to a terrible act of selfishness of a domestic partner or complete stranger. What motivated me to start was my partner Emi, she inspired me to reach out to her as I saw how she engaged with her students, I loved the energy and the level of her professionalism and dedication to martial arts. Also my coach at the time David Dunn was a huge inspiration, and kept me motivated in training prior to my injuries, he has continued to support me in hosting woman’s seminars at Premier Martial Arts in Santa Clarita.
