We had the good fortune of connecting with Min-Ji Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Min-Ji, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I a huge believer that giving up isn’t really an option, especially when you know deep inside that you have a dream that you know you love and care so passionately about. I think the only time to give up is when you don’t enjoy what you’re doing anymore, but at the same time it really isn’t giving up but rather walking on another path that might suit you better. If you have a dream, keep going, and if you love what you do, all the hardships that come with getting a step closer to your dream makes attaining your goals all much more worth to fight for. The hardships really do teach you something that you’ll probably need whilst walking down the path towards your dreams.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think being multicultural of being South Korean but having lived in three countries: Hong Kong, Singapore, America, and combining with the experiences of my upbringing gives my work a unique touch and execution. I love using clashing materials to create a look, and I believe it stems from the natural occurrences of the tension of my cultural upbringings
How I got here was a wild journey! It took me a while to find myself as I felt for most of my life I did not know where passion lied and so I tested many waters out to see what I truly enjoyed doing. But being so lost for majority of life brought me many skills that I use today for everything I create and is a huge asset to my work.
I would like the world to know is that I love making clothes/art that make me feel strong, unbreakable, untouchable, and confident and I hope that I make others who wear my clothes feel the same.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to my favourite spots in London but because I moved to London during Covid times and have been so incredibly busy, I would also be exploring London with her. But I would take her to different countries that are close to England like France, Italy, Germany, and explore those countries with her.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my team! I am nothing without my interns, seamstresses, friends, mentors, and family. But especially to the professors, Joe Segal and Maha Barsom, that believed in my vision when others did not.
