We had the good fortune of connecting with Lissa Mel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lissa, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art has been a constant presence in my life, and I have fond memories of hand making birthday gifts for my parents, always striving to surpass my previous year’s creations. From a young age, my mother instilled in me a passion for artistic expression. She played an instrumental role, assisting me with my early sketches and providing me with materials and books. Her constant guidance and support have shaped me into the artist I am today and paved the way for me to pursue a career in art.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At the age of 20, I decided to further my artistic studies at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. It was at Avni that I truly matured as an artist, dedicating myself to creating art every day. I take pride in the fact that my art is a unique and beautiful expression of myself, much like the distinctiveness of individual falsettos.
Taking a major leap of faith, I made the tough decision to quit my job just a month before a significant exhibition. Despite the absence of any guarantees of success, I chose to go all-in on my art career. Leaving behind everything I knew, I moved to Los Angeles to hone my craft and, looking back, I can confidently say that it was the right choice. Over the past three years, I have produced over 200 pieces of art, and my career has flourished. Additionally, I have created a line of merchandise featuring my art and, through my brand, I aspire to create a better world and unite the artistic community.
My love for physical performances and science continues to influence my work. In high school, I became fascinated with science. I explore matter at the molecular level through my art. Using abstract and figurative depictions, I can capture the peak moment of performance, mirroring the waves of matter at its most vibrational state. My art often depicts the dance between feminine and masculine energies. I use the human body as a vessel to contain and perform the dance of the natural realm. My larger paintings and sculptures generate their own vibrancy and life force, reflecting my abstract and figurative perceptions of the Universal Movement. I work in a variety of media. I love to express myself through my paintings, but I have also created a plethora of multimedia pieces. I do not contain myself to my distinctive abstract pop-art style—I also express myself in a variety of art styles.
Though it was a challenging decision to pursue art as a career, I am grateful that I followed my heart instead of succumbing to my fears.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a deeply spiritual person immersed in a busy and unrelenting world, I cherish the time and space I can find for nature and meditation. While they may be scarce, I recognize their significance for my well-being. I make an effort to visit the Lake Shrine off Sunset Boulevard in the Pacific Palisades at least once a week. Devoting an hour to feel the earth beneath my body and meditating in such a pristine place allows me to escape the concrete jungle of Los Angeles and reconnect with my soul and with God. The serenity of silence in this tranquil setting is liberating and essential for my art and my sanity alike.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Linda De Martinez from Gallery 612 in Santa Monica. Linda, my dear neighbor, has been an incredible source of support for me as an artist and in managing my gallery, Messengers Gallery.
