Meet Brandon Dougherty | Cinematographer and Colorist.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Dougherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think my understanding of balance has changed over the few years I have been in the film industry. I am very eager to create and make. I’m very action oriented so I tend to focus on the next project. In the last year, I have realized that I also need time to experience and live in order to facilitate the creation. I have been spending a lot more focus on seeing friends and getting out into the world, although it may be difficult in an economy like this with an industry that can be very hard to make a lot of money for a while.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You know, I find it hard as an artist to describe what sets you apart. I think that I have certain interests that may be unique to me and influence my work but its hard to say how I am truly different, especially in a time where we all have access to every art. I think that I am very interested in vintage aesthetics, ethereal atmosphere, fantasy in part. I think those things influence my work but I think I am still working on crafting a strong particular distinct voice in filmmaking and who knows if that ever ends.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in Los Angeles. I love Beachwood Canyon and going on sunset walks up there. That’s usually something I try to take everyone to do. I love an urban hike. A frequent place I love to hang out is Fred 62 in Los Feliz. They have bangin’ milkshakes and the vibe is so lovely. On a special occasion I love Huntington Gardens in Pasadena. That place is just truly a stunning journey. And the Arboretum in Pasadena. My friends took me up there for my birthday and it was such a crazy place to visit. I love the plant life in LA so getting to explore places for that is so fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my parents were really instrumental to my creativity. I don’t know if they realize that or perhaps they do. Growing up I was really encouraged to do art. I spent my childhood acting and singing and loving film. My dad was an engineer so he would help me make props for games and my mom put me into theatre. My favorite way to describe my upbringing is a story from college. I was in art school and a lot of the other students were talking about how their parents were upset they chose art. Some were from pre med or biology etc. I had briefly contemplated doing business because the creativity could happen outside of school and I called my mom on the phone and she said “No Brandon. I don’t care what you study but it has to be something creative.” and I didn’t realize how different from other people that was.
