We had the good fortune of connecting with emily ocon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi emily, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business as a way to share what I was learning during my undergraduate and graduate education. In my own journey of healing from trauma, I found it hard to find a place where there was a one-stop-shop of information for trauma healing resources with the mental, physical, and spiritual effects of the aftermath of trauma at the forefront. Thats where Healthembody was born, over the past 3 years it has developed into a platform sharing science-backed and spiritual tools to help you reconnect with yourself and sharpen your life toolbox.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never considered myself an artist or creative until this year. Growing up in a household with parents based in scientific industries, considering myself a creative was a foreign concept. A huge challenge for me was getting over the mental hump of identifying myself as an artist and my work as art. However creating content on the internet, and more specifically, combining breathwork and meditation with DJing, is an art. I started to step into the world of art and creatives when I worked for Bumble’s college marketing program during my junior and senior years of college. This program changed my world, allowing me to plan events and bring ideas in my head to life. Working for Bumble in marketing opened my eyes to a whole new environment. I had never even heard of marketing as a profession before I got to college because my world was saturated with doctors, hospitals, and classes like anatomy and physiology. After this experience, I was inspired to start my own health Instagram to share what I was learning in my Exercise Physiology degree. One of my best friends, Olivia Stauber, is a genius art director and she helped me through the years bring my vision to life through graphic design and branding. It was through managing this account and bringing it to life that I began to see myself as a creator and play with my artistic abilities. I went to graduate school for nutrition and exercise science and about two years into the program I realized my soul was yearning for more. I began to explore and get certified in disciplines like Breathwork and Reiki. I’ve always had a love for music as it has helped me connect so much to emotions through the years after my dad passed away at 11. My latest venture, Club Breathe, is where I combine breathwork and meditation with your favorite music to help you engage, release, and love the somatic practice of getting in your body. The journey to get here has taken many risks and betting on myself, moving past fear and imposter syndrome, and keeping my blinders on, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a non-LA local, I have to say after spending a month in LA it has become one of my favorite places. I would start with a sunrise or sunset hike at Runyon Canyon. As a Florida girl, the views never fail to amaze me. I would take them to Erewhon because although basic, it is a religious experience. For workouts, I would take us to Hot Pilates in Weho, it’s one of my favorite studios in the world, their workouts leave you sore, sweaty, feeling lean, and are only 45 minutes. For restaurants, I love: The Nice Guy, La Scala, Plancha Tacos, Koi, Soho House West Hollywood, & Nobu Malibu is definitely worth the hype.

For things to do, I personally love exploring Malibu and Pacific Palisades: the beaches, farmer’s markets, horseback riding, and surfing are some of my favorite pastimes there. A regular or non-alcoholic drink or regular drink and the view of the sunset by the ocean there is something I don’t think I could ever get used to. I love vintage shopping on Melrose and the people watching there are great as well. I have more to explore here but these are some of my favorites <3

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout the amazing mentors I have had that have gudied me along the way of tapping into connection with myself and my inner journey. My therapist, Ashley Lynne, my breathwork mentor, MJ Renshaw, my business coach, Brooke (@arcanumla) and my spiritual mentor, Thomas Edwards. All of these people have helped me to become the person I am today and it truly takes a village to do this work <3
