We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Dolores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting a band is pretty much the opposite of starting a business. It’s more of the creation of a parasitic organism you attach to your own skull to suck out your cerebrospinal fluid. And that’s before it sucks out your self-respect, your morals, and your faith in humanity. It will alienate you from your family, your faith, and any reasonably priced home appliance. It will leave you a shell of a person, a haunted machine draped in a cigarette-stained excuse for skin. As Hunter S Thompson said, there’s also a negative side.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started the band Suicide Queen in 2014. At that point it was just me and a couple friends who could join me on stage sporadically, and the first show ended up nearly melting a PA system. The idea of the band has always been turning your pain into power, and as if that weren’t difficult enough, using that power to write a decent tune, then going onstage and shrieking your throat out. Still though, I’ve found it far more exciting than carpentry or professional jump rope, neither of which I have ever done, and only one of which may actually exist. I’m from the Midwest originally and spent 6 years in Catholic school, so if there’s anything I want people to know about me or Suicide Queen, it’s that with enough depravity, you too can chase your dreams of sinking too much money into makeup and shoes. That’s how I’ve ever accomplished anything. That and coffee.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
West Hollywood. Best vegan food, the Rainbow, the Whisky, and a dentist where the chairs are all up against a window so people can watch you get your teeth drilled into. Love that. Plus let’s not forget, NO PARKING ANYWHERE EVER, drag queens, plastic surgery, and a Tesla supercharging lot that’s basically a maze. And the Viper Room, where River Phoenix died. And one more thing, the strip club with the neon sign that inspired Mötley Crüe’s “Girls Girls Girls.” I should also mention the Good Nite in North Hollywood, a fine and respectable karaoke establishment where once performed a rendition of Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” that a patron described as “iconic.”

And of course
Bar Sinister at Boardner’s
Which is beautiful and legendary
And has been a huge part of Suicide Queen’s story
