We had the good fortune of connecting with James Nield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, why did you pursue a creative career?
In the formative years of my education, traditional subjects failed to capture my interest, resulting in academic challenges. However, a pivotal shift occurred during middle school when I stumbled upon the realms of theatre and media studies. This discovery ignited a passion for the creative field, transforming my academic trajectory and allowing me to excel in areas that resonated with my innate interests. The spark for filmmaking had been kindled early on, thanks to my parents’ frequent trips to the theatre during my childhood. My fascination with the magic of cinema only intensified as I began watching films nightly on my laptop before bed. Following my formal education, I sought to explore my newfound passion, leading me to intern at a production house. This immersive experience not only clarified my career aspirations but also solidified my love for the dynamic world of cinematography.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Reaching the point where I am today has been a challenging yet immensely rewarding journey. Originally growing up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I immersed myself in the production industry for over three years, gaining invaluable insights into its workings and intricacies. However, the decision to move to Los Angeles two years ago marked a significant turning point. This leap required me to relearn the ropes and build my connections from scratch, starting anew at the bottom of the ladder. Despite the initial hurdles, I’ve found great joy in this challenge. The experience has introduced me to a plethora of talented individuals who have not only expanded my network but also shared their knowledge, contributing to my growth both professionally and personally. Embracing this journey has been transformative, shaping me into the professional I am today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having called Los Angeles home for just over two years, if I were to introduce this vibrant city to a friend, I’d begin with the iconic destinations that embody its diverse and captivating essence. A must-visit would undoubtedly be The Grove, known for its lively atmosphere and the bustling farmers’ market, offering an array of fresh produce, artisanal goods, and a taste of the city’s culinary delights. For breathtaking sunsets and a touch of coastal charm, a trip to the Santa Monica Pier is essential. The combination of its historic amusement park, captivating ocean views, and the vibrant energy of the surrounding area creates an unforgettable experience. These are just glimpses of the many facets that make Los Angeles a city like no other, a tapestry of cultures, flavors, and experiences waiting to be explored.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gratitude plays a pivotal role in acknowledging the journey that has led me to where I am today. Foremost, heartfelt thanks go to my family for their unwavering support and invaluable guidance throughout every twist and turn of my career. I owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated faculty at my media and drama school department who not only imparted technical expertise but also nurtured my creative instincts, laying the foundation for my skills in both realms. Equally, appreciation extends to the talented colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Their collective wisdom, shared experiences, and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of the industry. Each expression of support, every lesson learned, and every shared moment have contributed to the professional I am today, and for that, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who have been part of this journey.
