We had the good fortune of connecting with Zora Xu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zora, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose a creative career because I yearned for the societal recognition of the value that artists contribute, and I aspired to be respected as an artist. My peers and I are drawn to the arts because we share a profound love for the world and a collective belief in its potential for improvement. This shared conviction drives us to invest our time and energy into creating art, as we believe it is one of the most powerful means of effecting positive change—especially for those of us who may not excel in verbal expression.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m currently immersed in my first year of film studies at UCLA, working on a project that spans 20 weeks, and I eagerly anticipate its completion. The ability to bring my ideas to life through animation is truly exhilarating. One of my proudest creations is Detective Otter, an original character that emerged from a small assignment during my undergrad days. Through continuous refinement, Mr. Otter has evolved into a standalone character, starring in several short animations.
Securing the opportunity to animate at UCLA has been a rare and invaluable experience for me. Reflecting on the past six months, I vividly recall the anxiety of awaiting news about my acceptance. Late feedback on my grad school applications compounded the stress, particularly after witnessing some of my friends face rejection or hesitancy in applying to their preferred programs. The anticipation became so overwhelming that I found myself driving to the UCLA campus in hopes of seeking updates. It wasn’t until mid-June that I heard back from UCLA, and while initially placed on the waiting list, the prolonged period of internal struggle ultimately yielded a positive outcome.
The first half of 2023 was marked by a whirlwind of waiting and anxiety, during which I even experienced a weight loss of 20 pounds. Through this challenging time, I learned a valuable lesson: to focus on what I can control and strive for excellence in every endeavor. Regardless of the circumstances, I believe in putting forth my best effort and preparing diligently for the success that awaits.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a vibrant and dynamic city, and my advice would be to embrace its spontaneity and sense of freedom. I would say don’t plan too much, come and enjoy it! I’d prefer I could my friend to gain a living memory rather than a traveling experience. Of course, I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to introduce my friends to some of LA’s rich artistic heritage. With its plethora of art galleries and museums, the city offers a treasure trove of cultural experiences. One of my personal favorites is the Getty Center, which boasts an impressive collection of art spanning centuries and continents. Exploring its galleries and soaking in the breathtaking views of the city from its hilltop location is an experience not to be missed. So, while spontaneity is key, I’ll make sure to treat my friends to some unforgettable cultural experiences during their time in LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I sincerely hope that my story resonates with artists or art students who may be feeling lost, as I too once found myself navigating uncertain waters. During a particularly confusing time, I was fortunate to receive guidance from experienced mentors whose support was incredibly uplifting. In my final year of undergrad, I had the privilege of learning from two remarkable professors, Brian Staffer and Robert Hunt. Despite their busy schedules as successful artists, they generously shared their wealth of knowledge and encouragement with me, even though teaching students may have meant sacrificing more lucrative opportunities. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey.
While I may not yet have a crystal-clear vision of my future path, I am immensely grateful for the supportive individuals I’ve encountered along the way. Their guidance has been invaluable, and I am especially thankful to UCLA for providing me with the platform to pursue my graduate studies. I hope to pay forward the kindness and mentorship I’ve received by uplifting and supporting others on their artistic journeys.
