We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Blackstone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vanessa, what principle do you value most?
The value that matters most to me is inclusivity. I firmly believe that there is boundless potential in diversity, and by creating an inclusive environment, we not only allow everyone to be a part of the journey but also provide opportunities for growth and collaboration. Inclusivity, to me, means recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths and perspectives that each individual brings to the table. It’s about fostering a sense of belonging, where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. I believe that in an inclusive space, we not only lift each other up but also open doors for shared success and collective advancement. Embracing diversity in all its forms is not just a principle I adhere to; it’s the foundation for innovation, creativity, and lasting positive change.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Delving into my career as an Executive Director, my approach to leadership is grounded in a bottom-up philosophy, where I passionately guide others to success. What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to leading with gratitude and humility, creating a space where everyone has the opportunity to grow and thrive. I believe in the power of diverse experiences and the critical importance of representation in my field.

My journey to this role has been shaped by resilience, as I am a former foster youth. Representing the diverse experiences that often don’t thrive off of privilege, I understand the significance of breaking barriers and paving the way for others who might face similar challenges. I firmly believe that representation matters and that true progress comes from diverse voices at the table.

One of my proudest accomplishments is achieving the status of author with ‘The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook,’ set to be available for orders on November 1st, 2024. This achievement wasn’t handed to me; I earned it through hard work, determination, and the relationships I’ve built along the way. My journey has been a non-linear process, marked by tenacity and consistency, as well as the invaluable support system I’ve cultivated.

I want people to know that success is not a solo endeavor. Humbling oneself is essential, recognizing the collective effort it takes to achieve goals. My story is a testament to the power of resilience, consistency, and the importance of self-care in pursuing one’s aspirations. I am not just an Executive Director; I am a symbol of what the field needs – diversity, resilience, and a dedication to creating spaces where everyone can flourish.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Certainly! Larchmont Village, with its charming community and diverse offerings, has been a significant part of my life in Los Angeles, particularly during my years as a nanny. Among the many wonderful establishments in the village, Chevalier’s Books holds a special place in my heart, serving as a sanctuary that’s witnessed various chapters of my journey. As we venture a little beyond Larchmont, you can find some of my favorite spots to venture to that bring culture and nature!

Day 1: Explore Larchmont Village

Morning: Kick off the week with a delicious breakfast at Great White, known for its vibrant atmosphere and scrumptious dishes.
Late Morning: Take a stroll through Larchmont Village, exploring local boutiques and shops. Don’t forget to pop into Tailwaggers to pick up some treats for your furry friends.
Afternoon: Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Kiku Sushi, indulging in their fresh and flavorful Japanese cuisine.
Evening: Wrap up the day with a visit to Chevalier’s Books and some ice cream at Jenny’s.

Day 2: Cultural Excursions

Morning: Venture beyond Larchmont to visit cultural attractions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) or the La Brea Tar Pits.
Afternoon: Lunch at The Original Farmer’s Market at the Grove. My favorite is the turkey club at Magee’s Kitchen.
Evening: Return to Larchmont for a chill pizza dinner at Village Pizzeria.

Day 3: Outdoor Recreation

Morning: Spend the morning at Griffith Park and visit the Old LA Zoo!
Afternoon: Grab a casual lunch at a local spot, perhaps revisiting one of the favorites from Day 1.
Evening: Enjoy an amazing happy hour, what I like to call HHH (Hotel Happy Hour) at The Edmon.

Day 4-7: The rest of the time, just revisit the favorites and head back to Larchmont Village!
Whether it’s the welcoming ambiance of Great White, the pet-friendly haven of Tailwaggers, the culinary delights of Kiku Sushi, or the literary escape at Chevalier’s Books.
