We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalia Hayon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dalia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Believing in my ability to adapt and make a difference in people’s lives, led me to strive in a few positions and later successful businesses at a level I could have never imagine possible while raising a beautiful family and having a long successful marriage.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My professional career began in 1970, shortly after my second child was born, and 4 years after my husband and I with our 6 months old baby immigrated to the United States. In 1970, I proudly became an American Citizen (holding dual citizenships. After completing my Early Childhood Education degree at Stern College in New York, I accepted a position of Hebrew and Sunday school teaching at University Synagogue in Brentwood. During the week, while my children were in pre-school, I had the opportunity to acquire a job with Hotel Management company, doing their bookkeeper and payroll, tasks I have learned on my own. In 1974, we decided to move to Los Angeles, California and live our new life in a weather more familiar to our place of origin, Israel.
One year later, my husband and I opened our first Lighting retail location. With my natural sense of business management, and what I have learned from my own mother who back in the 40′ managed my father’s Real Estate company in Israel, our lighting and furniture company grew to 14 locations in California and 4 in Huston, Texas. I employed an average of 120 happy people. We than went on to open a Capo de Monte factory in Bassano del Grappa Italy where we manufactured a unique line of ceiling fans and accessories (first in the USA). I continued to grow when we traveled to the Far East and had number of manufacturers working for us. The most important part was-we always took our kids on our trips around the world, as we felt that while missing a few days of school, they will learn much more traveling the world and learning about the possibilities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A few of my favorite spots to visit were San Diego, Monterey, California and Catalina Island. My husband is a licensed Boat Captain, so our most fun was to let our employees run our businesses while we would sail to one of those locations, to name a few on board our 48′ Formosa Sailboat which we owned for over 17 years.
In addition, in 1997, we purchased a 100 ft. party boat where my husband was the captain, my daughter and I were the bartender (although neither one of us drink alcohol). I was also in charge of the catering companies that would serve our clients.
Having corporate events, weddings and burials at sea, were part of the joy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this recognition to my amazing children (Ofek 59, Iris 56 and grandchildren Alexa, 32, Alyson 29, Yonah 18 and Asher 16.) I would not have this wonderful family without my husband Josh of 60 years.
