Meet Abby Cooper | Queer Events Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
To put it simply, I was looking for something that did not exist and so I chose to create it. When it comes to queer events for lesbians, queer women, and gender expansive people, there aren’t many events that overlap with electronic dance music, much less bass music. I love experimental bass, dubstep, and drum n bass and I love attending raves. There was no nightlife event that I could find for the queer community that highlighted these kinds of music. I started Bass n Babes to fill that niche. Furthermore, I wanted to build a community within the bass music scene of vibrant women and queer people.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Bass n Babes is a queer-centric event series and artist collective. As a queer person who loves bass music and raves, I realized the lack of nightlife spaces that combined these niches. When I started DJing and getting more immersed in the EDM world, I noticed the lack of female and queer representation, especially in bass music. I started Bass n Babes with the mission of creating queer spaces within the EDM community and uplifting queer and other underrepresented DJs and producers. The ultimate goal of Bass n Babes is to build the feminine and queer presence in the bass music scene.
Bass n Babes is not just an event, it’s a vibrant tapestry of unity, acceptance and euphoria that leaves a lasting impression on every soul fortunate enough to experience our community. Embodying all the core concepts of PLUR, Bass n Babes centers queer women, trans, and nonbinary individuals with the goal of elevating our queer community in the rave scene. This is extremely special and important because there are not any other queer-centered bass music events.
Creating a space that is safe for people of all identities is at the center of what Bass n Babes is, as well as uplifting queer artists. I want the world to know that we are here and we are growing!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them around the Silverlake neighborhood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All of the people who have supported Bass n Babes by attending events, DJing for us, working for us or in any other way.
