Meet Julia Maixer | Cinematographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Maixer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a very young age, I recognized my innate affinity for artistic expression, initially through painting and drawing. Even in my formative years, I was able to achieve several art awards at just 6 and 10 years old when competing for my local town art competitions. As I navigated through school, I found solace and joy in the artistic subjects available, where my abilities earned recognition and sparked my desire to pursue a career in the arts.
Simultaneously, my fascination with cinema increased, fueled by watching way too many movies. It was not long after that I realized that film could potentially be more than just a pastime—it could be my future. Driven by ambition and a thirst for new opportunities, I made the bold decision to seek broader horizons beyond the limited education on film in my come country, Spain. This led me to embark on a transformative journey to the United Kingdom, where I spent my final years of school at Hurtwood House School, where I was able to take photography and media classes. Naturally, through the photography class, I found myself drawn to the art of cinematography.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Navigating the world of cinematography, particularly as a female professional, has been a journey marked by both triumphs and trials. In an industry often overshadowed by male peers, carving out a space for oneself demands resilience and dedication. My personal journey in discovering cinematography began when I took my first step abroad in the United Kingdom, where I was able to discover through photography class my creativity through the lens which led me to consider cinematography as a career path.
These initiation into visual storytelling ignited a profound passion within me, leading to awards and recognition for my photography, particularly in portraitures. Fuelled by the love for the medium, I returned home to Spain, to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Film Studies at ESCAC (Escola Superior d’Audiovisuals de Catalunya), specializing in cinematography.
Driven by an insatiable hunger for growth, I embarked on a transformative chapter, relocating to Los Angeles to immerse myself in the heart of the film industry, pursuing a life-time goal and dream of studying there and setting a foot into the professional world. Following a year dedicated to small photography projects and working as a camera trainee, I seized the opportunity to pursue my ultimate aspiration: admission to the American Film Institute’s cinematography program. And soon came the exciting news that I was admitted into the program. Currently, I find myself amidst the exhilarating rollercoaster of my first year at the American Film Institute, fervently pursuing my educational goals while eagerly anticipating the transition to the professional world.
Despite the challenges of forging an unconventional path in a traditional setting back home, and the many challenges that comes from being a women and young in this very particular branch of film, I remain resolute in my commitment to realizing my dreams. The journey so far has been a testament to perseverance and passion, with I have always tried to approach each project with self-expression and growth. While the demands of the industry can be daunting, I approach every endeavor with a blend of humility and determination, constantly striving to push the boundaries of my creativity and the relentless pursuit for excellence and dedication to my craft.
As I reflect on my trajectory, I am filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of my family and mentors, who have been great support. While the road ahead may be daunting, I truly believe true fulfillment lies in the pursuit of one’s passions, no matter how hard it gets. I am still young, and I truly believe the rollercoaster is only just starting for me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I haven’t had much time to explore Los Angeles beyond it’s most popular touristic spots. The American Film Institute is a very intense program, it truly becomes your life. But I am always a fan of nature, especially since I always take my camera with me and love to discover new natural scenarios looking through a lens. Most recently I was in the area of Palm Springs, 2 hour drive from Los Angeles, it’s beautiful, and very recommendable. I can not wait to explore more in the future.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In the dynamic and often unpredictable world of film, I always seek for stability in my personal life as a grounding force, and I attribute much of my own stability to the support of my family. Without their encouragement and belief in me, navigating the challenges of pursuing a career in film would have been far more daunting. Growing up in a traditional town in Spain where the film industry was largely unknown, I am grateful that my parents encouraged me to follow my passion, even though they themselves were unfamiliar with this field.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my mentors and educators who played pivotal roles in shaping my journey. To the professors at Hurtwood House school, who first sparked my interest in cinematography and photography. A special mention must be made of Geoffrey Cowper, my undergraduate professor, whose wisdom and support were instrumental in my academic and professional development. His mentorship not only deepened my understanding of film but also facilitated my successful application to the American Film Institute. I am also indebted to the esteemed film director and writer, Santiago Pumarola, whose belief in my potential led to my first job as a camera trainee. His guidance and advocacy were invaluable, not only in kickstarting my career but also in navigating the competitive application process for the American Film Institute.
As I embark on this exciting chapter at the American Film Institute, I carry with me the lessons and encouragement of those who have supported and inspired me along the way. This fuels my determination to improve and make the most of this extraordinary opportunity.
