We had the good fortune of connecting with Pok Kwan (Bobby) Chiu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pok Kwan (Bobby), let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Growing up with music surrounding me, I’ve always been inspired by the art of sound. Having learned my image-making practice from my bachelor’s at NYU, I strive to tie the close connection between music and visuals. When I first wanted to explore this route, I pursued the path of film scoring, understanding the logical process behind creating stories through music and visuals. Specifically in film scoring, I was able to create from both directions, realizing the importance of each other and looking for the perfect balance between the two. After studying film scoring, I observed the liveliness and dynamics behind the art form more than ever. Therefore, I shifted to shooting live music events through photography and videography. Through this experience, I work closely with music artists, integrating my knowledge and passion for music with my unique understanding of visual production, delivering visuals specifically for music-related content. Artists are generally immersed in their most personal zone while creating and expressing their thoughts through art. I, as an artist in visual and sound, am working toward being that bridge that connects the two mediums, documenting this special and meaningful energy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Bobby is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Shanghai, China. Weaving the threads of traditional analog photography with the cutting-edge realms of virtual reality and 3D modeling, his artistic journey is a testament to the transformative power of embracing both the past and the future, utilizing multiple mediums like music, collage, and installation to transcend the traditional perimeters of visual narrative. Colorblindness, a unique facet of Bobby’s perception, catalyzes his exploration of photography, providing him with unique palettes in his practice. Through this unconventional lens, he invites viewers to witness the world anew, challenging preconceived notions of color and form. As a photographer with a background in music, Bobby approaches his craft with a synesthetic perspective, introducing multidimensions to the viewing experience of his work. His practice in film scoring and sound design has accompanied his still works, resonating with viewers beyond the visuals. This fusion of disciplines enriches his work and invites audiences to an immersive exploration.
Growing up in diverse international backgrounds, Bobby’s work has left its mark in Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, and New York. His lens serves as a cultural bridge, capturing the stories and nuances of communities with an unparalleled deepness. Bobby firmly believes in art’s transformative power to break boundaries and connect disparate worlds. With each photograph, he seeks to infuse energy, provoke thought, and inspire a dialogue that surpasses geographical and cultural constraints. As he continues to push the limits of his practice, his mission remains clear – to share his unique perspective with a wider audience, fostering a global community through the universal language of art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the city of New York, every corner tells a story, and every experience is a masterpiece waiting to unfold. I’d plan out this trip on rental bikes, as moving around is already a special New Yorker experience in itself. Below is a unique itinerary I would try to assemble for a friend.
Day 1: Exploration
Morning: Brunch at “Ess A Bagel” in the neighborhood of Nomad, trying out the New Yorker version of sandwiches.
Afternoon: Ride through Central Park, discovering hidden pathways and iconic landmarks like Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge.
Evening: Dinner at “Artichoke Pizza,” one of my favorite pizza spots with the largest portion. Each piece could be shared amongst two, and the absurd amount of toppings feels like you’re drinking a cup of creamy soup.
Day 2: Immersion
Morning: Explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), where you can explore centuries-old artistic treasures from around the globe.
Afternoon: Lunch at “Eataly” in the Flatiron District, where you can experience authentic Italian cuisine and browse specialty food markets.
Evening: Broadway show at the majestic theater district, experiencing the magic of live performances and captivating storytelling. SIX is a must-watch show!!!
Day 3: Urban
Morning: High Line Park, walking through elevated gardens and contemporary art installations.
Afternoon: Street food in K-Town, enjoying BBQ Chicken, the original corndogs and freshly made boba.
Evening: Nighttime helicopter tour, soaring above the glittering city lights for a breathtaking aerial view at Fly NYON, where you can dangle your feet at a doors-off flight.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Christopher Sung, also recognized as “Sunkis,” is an up-and-coming R&B artist in the United States. Chris is a self-made singer-songwriter who grew up in San Francisco. In 2023, Chris traveled to NYU for a school show, and I happened to come across his promotional content. I was truly inspired by his music and the positive energy he delivers through his artistic practice. As he strives to drive the bridge between Mandarin and American music, I thought our paths could somewhat align. After cold-calling him through his email, we connected and collaborated successfully. We are now both working closely together in using our unique voice to make a difference in the music industry.
