Meet Mert Ozcan | Music Producer, Engineer, Mixer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mert Ozcan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mert, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Music was always a big passion for me. I came to the United States to study music and pursue it as a career. In the beginning I worked at a couple incredible recording studios like House of Rock and Interscope Records but eventually wanted to have more control over the type of projects I’d work on and the freedom to create my own schedule so I decided to start my own music and sound studio.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really proud of the immersive mixes I did in the last few years for artists like alt-J, Black Pumas, St. Vincent, Sigur Ros, Major Lazer and more. I recognized Dolby Atmos as a major shift in the audio industry. Earlier than most music studios and engineers who are using it today. In the early days I had to do some convincing to get indie labels and managers on board with the idea but everyone walked away really happy with the results and I believe the work I did added to the artistic value and statement of those records I worked on. I always strive for achieving the highest quality result and making a record/soundtrack/sonic statement that the artist, director or brand I’m working with wants to express.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d recommend staying at Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood, even for Angelenos who are looking to do a staycation. It has a great rooftop bar/restaurant and pool area. Good music, people and ambiance. Some of my favorite places to see live shows are the Greek Theatre, Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Roxy, Troubadour, Hotel Cafe are also classics. Zebulon is a fun time. I enjoy going to standup shows a lot so a visit to The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory or the Largo is a must. If you’re into weird desert art go check out Bombay Beach as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my parents for believing in me and giving me the freedom to travel across a couple continents and an ocean to pursue my dreams. To Berklee College of Music for teaching me everything I needed to know about the engineering and production. And to my first boss, mentor and friend Tyler Barth for his endless support.
