We had the good fortune of connecting with Yishan Fu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yishan, why did you pursue a creative career?
Hello, my name is Yishan Nicky Fu. I was born and raised in Taiwan. I like to draw and create beautiful things since I was little, so I naturally went to an art high school. In school, I learned how to use various media and drawing techniques to express my own vision and thoughts, and my favorite media are oil painting and traditional Chinese painting. However, I feel that art is not something that everyone can easily approach on a daily basis. For a while, I started to think about what the easiest and closest way for me to show my aesthetic to the world would be, and I found my answer in Fashion Design. I like the way that garments make people feel supported. Dressing is another way to express yourself without using any words. It is a very direct and instinctive form of expression. However, on the other hand, it’s also like a metaphor, and everyone sees it from a different perspective. Thus, I came to the states to study fashion design in FIT. Because I’m also a painter, I’m really sensitive to images and colors. I usually get my inspiration from things and objects around me. Sometimes, it starts with colors or images accompanied by a story in my mind. Every project that I created makes me grow and gives me a chance to reflect on myself. I really enjoying communicate and share my vision to the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up in Taiwan, I was immersed in a rich cultural tapestry that inspired my creativity from a young age. I have always been drawn to colors, intricate patterns, and innovative design concepts. Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons that have shaped me as both an artist and a professional. Like any creative field, the fashion industry is highly competitive and fraught with challenges. I’ve faced setbacks, rejection, and self-doubt along the way. However, what sets me apart is my unwavering determination and resilience. I’ve learned to view obstacles as opportunities for growth and to never let fear of failure hold me back. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my artistic vision while also being open to feedback and collaboration. I’ve learned the value of time management, organization, and effective communication in the fast-paced world of fashion design. What I want the world to know about me is that I am committed to creating fashion that not only looks beautiful but also tells a meaningful story. My designs are a reflection of my inner self, my passion for creativity, and my vision for a more inclusive and sustainable fashion industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I would bring my friend around the city, I’ll be bring them to “Sunday in Brooklyn” to have pancakes as brunch and grab some coffee in “Bluestone Lane”. I really like their mocha. In the afternoon, I’ll go to my favorite indoor rock climbing spot “Movement LIC” for the climbing activity and then go to K-town “Her name is Han” for dinner.
