We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is like a fork in the road. It can lead to a big payoff or a valuable life lesson. Staying in our comfort zone is tempting, but it can also make life feel stagnant. So, what are the risks that have shaped my career? Two stand out: taking on an agent and going solo.
First, the agent dilemma. As an artist, I pondered whether I needed an agent to succeed. I’d already worked with big clients like Coke and Infinity Motors, so the stakes were high. I took the plunge, paying a hefty fee to my agent. But here’s the twist: I learned that self-promotion mattered just as much as artistic talent. Networking became my secret weapon. The risk paid off, boosting my self-esteem and opening doors.
Then there’s my biggest gamble: embracing full-time freelancing for over two decades. It felt like placing all my chips on a single hand. But you know what? Sometimes, those daring risks lead to the most rewarding journeys.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other artists? it’s my unwavering commitment to growth. I’ve come to realize that as an artist, I’m never truly “done.” My work and skillset are like a living canvas, constantly evolving.
I have a number of things that I am happy to have crossed my “Bucket List.” Although, I’ve never been a fan of artists that talk about themselves, I’m probably most proud of the Clio Awards I’ve earned for the films “Hidden Figures”, “Deadpool 2” and “They Cloned Tyrone”. These aren’t just shiny trophies; they’re milestones that affirm my choice to travel down this wild, colorful path.
My professional journey has been an interesting one. I began as a graphic designer that later moved to the fashion industry. After that, I moved to a full career as an illustrator, that later transitioned into digital sculpting for companies like Sideshow. All of that experience ultimately earned me a position in the gaming industry.
While there have been challenges along the way, I wouldn’t have changed a thing if I could. I have always considered artistic creativity similar to marital arts. Because of that, I have striven to learn as many styles as possible to reach my end goal.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
