Meet Winnie Kuo | Motion designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Winnie Kuo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Winnie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Hello! I’m a motion designer from Taiwan. Never did I imagine that one day I’d have the chance to study and work in the US. The path that has led me here today began with winning an opportunity provided by our government, which sponsored my full tuition to study at ArtCenter for one year, along with some living allowance. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity as it has been a pivotal turning point in my life. I constantly remind myself of how fortunate I am, and thus, I approach every challenge with a commitment to learn and give my best.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While I don’t perceive myself as an exceptionally gifted artist, I am committed to continuous learning and observation. What sets me apart, perhaps, is my dedication to consistency and discipline. As a motion designer, I make it a habit to watch a new motion piece every day. Regardless of its style, I meticulously observe what makes each motion successful and extract valuable lessons from it. This practice not only enhances my technical skills but also broadens my creative thinking, pushing me beyond the confines of my familiar territory.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are plenty of enjoyable activities to experience around LA. One of my favorite pastimes is visiting the beach. The atmosphere along California’s coastline is incredibly laid-back and relaxing. Additionally, engaging in sports-related activities such as snowboarding or surfing offers a unique and thrilling experience. Within the city, there is no shortage of excellent museums to explore. Some of my personal favorites include the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Broad.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a great deal of gratitude to my parents for their unwavering support; I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I vividly recall the moment I first mentioned my desire to compete in the study abroad program; they wholeheartedly embraced and assisted me throughout the journey. Particularly when my English proficiency was lacking, and I needed to improve for the TOEFL test, they reassured me not to worry about the test fees, urging me instead to focus on achieving the highest score possible. Though the study process was often isolating and exhausting, the thought of my parents always revitalized my motivation to persevere. I am determined to prove myself and make them proud.
