We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Roehl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brad, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I started taking risks the second I decided not to go to college in order to pursue my business. I believe risk assessment is a business owners number 1 job. Knowing when to spend when to hold back and when to jump is one of the things that can set apart a company from being just okay to being great. I believe I have done a decent job at making the right calls at the right time. I’ve hired when my company was cash poor foreseeing an influx of work. I have pushed my team to make creative risks, I’ve taken very risky approaches to sales calls and I have found that success comes from discomfort. Risk, in my option is one of the major drivers for discomfort. So in some ways I guess my entire business is built off risk assessment, diving in head first and learning as we go!

What should our readers know about your business?
I started Visionary Studios an advertising agency when I was just 15 years old out my parents basement. I started with a camera and a love for film making. I spent high school worried about learning what made sense to me (which was how to run a video business). I barley graduated high school and moved out into a tiny apartment. I spent the first year on my own working out of my apartment mainly providing video support to local organizations and companies. I then met Kieran who is now my business partner. I saw the increased work flow starting to take over my life but I didn’t have enough money to hire an employee so I gave him half of the company to give him incentive to work with me! Looking back that was one of the best risks I ever took! About 3 months into our partnership we rented a small office and barley scraped by for the first 6 months. After providing free videos to almost everyone in town to get our name out there we started to book high ticket items. 1 year later we hired our first employee and now only 3 years later we have a full time team of 6 people! I am now 22 years old and I’m just starting to understand business even though I have technically been in the industry for 7 years! Today we provide our clients with placements on TV, Radio, Socials, Google, Billboards etc! As a very young business owner I often am the youngest guy in the room which also means I typically am not even close to the smartest guy in the room but I play the line of a kid who wants to work really hard to become the smartest guy in the room and most of clients love us for that ambition. We work incredibly hard at being the best because the best will never lose. If we have the best quality, price, and service there is no reason for us to lose a job. I am so proud of what Kieran and I have accomplished in the past 3 years. We’ve seen incredible growth and have no plans to quite!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Parents shaped me into a kid who had drive and ambition. I can’t thank them enough for helping steer the ship. While they highly disagreed with my decision to skip college they raised me to be the person I am now and I can’t thank them enough for that! I also have to thank my beautiful wife for supporting me and staying with me through thick and thin. She has been my rock throughout this journey and without her none of of this could have happened!
