We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess DeMarchis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jess, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
It is hard to boil down success to just one factor, but I believe having the mindset of unconditional commitment is a core piece. Anyone creating a brand or business is going to need courage and grit as they’ll most likely face inevitable difficulty on the path to success. And having the mentality that I am 100% committed to my mission regardless of how I feel, what circumstances are present, or if it goes according to plan has kept me focused, disciplined and in alignment with my goal of improving the quality of coaching being provided.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always knew I wanted to have a big impact and serve people in a meaningful way. So, I went to college for social work and studied abroad in Mexico and Ecuador. I then went to graduate school to become a therapist and specialized in trauma therapy, which I did primarily in Latin communities in Philadelphia. Simultaneously, I was paying for all of my schooling by working at a marketing firm. This particular company was focused on teaching young people about personal development, leadership, business and coaching. I saw the potential for how my training in therapy and coaching could complement each other, but it wasn’t until a few years into my field that I started really considering launching my coaching business. I still loved my work as a therapist and was thriving in my career- I had multiple licenses and certifications, was teaching and publishing research as well as had a thriving practice but felt that entrepreneurial itch. I knew I was capable of more but was nervous to leave such a successful and valued profession that I was good at to start a business in an industry that many still didn’t understand. However, it got to the point that failing was a better option than settling. It was a messy journey at first because I tried to do it alone. It wasn’t until I fully committed and invested in support that I saw results. I got real clear on why I wanted to do this, what I wanted to create, and just stayed open to how I was going to accomplish that- which changed over time. It was important for me to train my brain to fail forward, to build belief in myself despite the lack of evidence in the beginning, and be mindful of who I was surrounding myself with. And over the years, I learned that confidence and clarity comes from courage and action- not the other way around. This is still something I lean on as we continue to grow and trailblazer the coaching industry. I am proud of what I have created and can see how it is the perfect cumulation of the last decade of education and experience as a both a therapist and coach. I remain committed to the mission- up level the quality of coaching being provided & be the leading coach certification program in the industry.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I recently moved to Raleigh from Philadelphia. It is a small, warm, friendly and upcoming area. I enjoy hosting family and friends because there is always something new to do. My favorite visits are a blend of active and social activities. There are many lakes to paddle board, warm beaches to surf and relax, as well as the mountains near Asheville to hike. There is also a great food scene in the Raleigh/Durham area- with new restaurants and dining experiences opening all the time. This area is also dog friendly, which I love because I bring my golden retriever everywhere with me. So, we would also check out the dog friendly breweries, street festivals, live music venues, and coffee shops downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I was 18 years old, I was recruited by a marketing firm called Vector Marketing that introduced me to personal development. They showed me that through mindset work and strategic planning, I can create results I thought were impossible. And by the age of 20, I was already making more money than my parents, traveling the world, started my first business, attended multiple personal development conferences, and was speaking in front of crowds with hundreds of people. This opportunity gave me the skills and confidence to pursue my dreams, even when others doubted me.
