We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Mintle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea of starting your own business can be very daunting. You have to embrace the fact that you’re entering the unknown.
After years of working in the fashion industry on both the retail and corporate side, I realized that I wanted the flexibility to be more present with my family. Prior to launching my own company, I did freelance fashion work for local businesses including small projects and content creation. This helped me gain a better understand of the dynamics of owning a business and served as a great starting point for building my network. The reality is, there are so many things you can’t anticipate until you jump in with both feet and get started. My son was six months old when I launched Gossip & Glamour. It was scary to leave a stable job with health insurance and a 401k plan, but 14 years later, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and my family.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve known from a very early age that I would have a career in the fashion industry. As a teenager, I was laser-focused on that goal and would seize any opportunity to move in that direction whether it was reading fashion magazines, taking summer courses related to design, talking to people who worked in fashion, or reading books about industry professionals.

I started working in retail as soon as I turned 16, served on the BP Nordstrom Fashion Board my senior year in high school, and went on to pursue two degrees in fashion while working in retail full-time. It was crazy and chaotic, but I loved it. By the time I was 19, I was running a million-dollar store at Alderwood Mall and I knew that I wanted to make the move over to the fashion office.

The great thing about starting your career in retail is that you establish a healthy feedback loop through regular performance evaluations. This was critical to my personal and professional growth and helped me develop my skills in the fashion industry. It wasn’t always easy to hear constructive criticism but being able to witness these blindspots and improve upon them has helped me immensely in my career. In fact, it’s been my secret weapon. My focus now is on helping the next generation of fashion industry professionals seek out feedback from mentors that will help them learn and grow as they navigate their careers.

I got my first job on the corporate side of the industry by networking and sending multiple follow-ups to the hiring manager for Zumiez. I could have given up many times as there were multiple months in between our correspondence points, but I didn’t. Initially they offered me a full-time internship and I had to turn it down because I was already working full-time. Eventually, they carved out money in their budget to create a new position and they hired me for the job. It was a dream come true!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to Jeff Mintle. He encouraged me to take a leap of faith and start my own business. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.
