We had the good fortune of connecting with Jove Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jove, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Authenticity is key, being fully myself and sharing my art and talents as my true self is the key to my success, along with hard work and kindness of course! I spent much of my life hiding myself to please others, my family, my community, and the religion I was raised in. When I finally set myself free and realized I was and am beautiful as I am, it unleashed a lot for me, and I built a brand on being you and doing you authentically!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a color-obsessed designer for those who dare to be different! I like to do the opposite of what others are doing, I love to push boundaries and try new things! In my career, I have been a salmon swimming upstream while everyone else was heading downstream, with the current. Weddings and Interiors come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, but most people tend to lean towards neutral colors and classic and or traditional designs, but that just did not do it for me. The market was very saturated with sameness, so at first it was scary to try other things, as they say, if it’s not broken, why fit it? But I just did not love neutral pallets and business as usual, so when given the opportunity I explored new styles, ideas, and designs, and as clients loved it so did others and it was shared online, and more people started to see it and love it too! I spent most of my life living by the rules of the faith I was raised in, told how to think, how to love, how to be. So when I finally broke free and discovered myself I realized there is power in being you, in sharing your voice and ideas and others who are drawn to it will find it. Just because most people do something one way, doesn’t mean you cannot try it another!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many places I love in the city, I would take my bestie on a food tour with some moments of nature and a little relaxation at the spa for sure!

We would start with coffee and a fabulous croissant from L’Appartement 4F, stroll down to the iconic promenade with sweeping views of Manhattan, we would walk our way down to Dumbo where we would have lunch at Celestine, a Mediterranean restaurant right next to the bridge with delish food and an epic view. After lunch we would walk our way over the Manhattan Bridge into the city, landing in Chinatown we would have to get some dumplings at Joes Shanghai, the soup dumplings are the most iconic and then we would stroll over to Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for green tea and oreo ice cream! We would end the day with a drink at Apotheke Chinatown, it’s a whole vibe and the cocktails are fab!

Day two we would focus on theater and ideally see two shows in a day, with brunch at the iconic TIck Tock Diner, see a matinee show, then head over to Bryant Park to soak up some sun and chat all about the show over a snack from Lady M. We would then see a second show, followed by dinner at La Grande Boucherie where we can gab all about the show over some french food in a beautiful and large restaurant that is nearby.

Day three we make our way to The Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and while we are in Prospect Heights we have to go to Toms for breakfast, and then after the museum and gardens we head to Olmstead for dinner, just beyond delish and also nearby! We would end the night with ice cream at Ample Hills.

Day four, five, and six we make our way to fire island to spend time by the beach in the car-free queer community of Cherry Grove. It is a barrier island just an hour and a half from the city, only accessible by ferry. You do not feel like you’re in NY when you’re on Fire Island. There we will take long walks on the beach and through the Sunken Forrest. We will have dinner at Top of the Bay and order a garlic knot pizza from the local pizza spot!

For the final day we will relax at the Spa on Governors Island, another boat ride away, its an oasis in the city where you can chill out by the pool, hot tub, massages, and meals, all with an amazing view! If we have any energy left we would head to Gitano for a final bite and drink!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without the amazing staff at The Boys and Girls Club of the South Coast Area. I spent 12 years growing up with them and eventually working with them. From age 6 to 18 I was at the Club every day, open to close, participated in every program, and had many firsts with them and because of them, they are my shoutout, especially Veronica and Tranci!
