We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Kellie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks has been a defining element of my life and career, particularly as a musician and guitar player. My journey began in the North West of England. Choosing to uproot my life in my early 20’s and move to America was one of the most significant risks I’ve ever taken. It wasn’t just about changing my location; it was about leaving behind everything familiar—family, friends, and a well-established musical community—to pursue a dream in an entirely new environment.

Risk, for me, is about stepping into the unknown with the belief that the potential rewards outweigh the uncertainties. When I moved to America, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. There were cultural adjustments, the challenge of building a new network from scratch, and the relentless pursuit of becoming a citizen—all while trying to establish myself in a highly competitive industry.

Taking this risk played a crucial role in my personal and professional growth. It taught me resilience and adaptability, as I had to constantly navigate new challenges and overcome obstacles. The move also fueled my creativity; being exposed to new cultures, sounds, and experiences enriched my musical expression in ways I could never have imagined if I had stayed in my comfort zone.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Certainly! As a guitarist with a diverse background in the music industry, my journey has been marked by a passion for versatility and collaboration. Before he moved to Spain, I played second guitar and contributed backing vocals in Frank Gambale Soulmine featuring Boca, allowing me to explore a fusion of soulful melodies and intricate guitar work. Additionally, I am actively involved in recording sessions for Jimmy Haslip Productions, particularly for saxophonist Randal Clark. These sessions are a significant part of my work behind the scenes, where I contribute to crafting the soundscapes and musical narratives that define Clark’s recordings. I am about to play a session with Vinnie Colaiuta (Jeff Beck, Sting), Jimmy Johnson (James Taylor, Allan Holdsworth) and Bob Mintzer (Yellowjackets, Buddy Rich). This will be a defining session in my career!

Working closely with Jimmy Haslip and Randal Clark has allowed me to bring my guitar expertise to the studio environment, ensuring that each recording captures the essence of the music with precision.

My experiences touring with The Three Degrees at renowned venues such as the London O2 arena and the Iridium Jazz Club in NYC have been pivotal in shaping my career. What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly transition between roles and genres, from supporting roles in prominent bands to collaborating with iconic acts like Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express at venues like the Baked Potato. This versatility not only enriches my musical expression but also enhances my adaptability as a musician.

My journey to this point has been anything but easy. It has required dedication, persistence, and a willingness to continually learn and evolve. Overcoming challenges, whether they were musical, logistical, or personal, has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of staying true to my artistic vision.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the power of collaboration. Working with diverse artists has broadened my musical horizons and enriched my creativity. It has also reinforced the significance of humility and openness in the creative process.

What I want the world to know about my journey is that it’s not just about the performances or the accolades, but about the deep connection and passion I have for music. My brand is rooted in authenticity and a commitment to pushing musical boundaries while honoring the traditions that inspire me. Whether I’m on stage with Frank Gambale Soulmine or in the studio with Jimmy Haslip Productions, my goal is to create music that resonates with people on a soulful level and leaves a lasting impact.

In essence, my artistry is defined by a blend of technical prowess, emotional depth, and a relentless pursuit of musical excellence. It’s a journey that continues to unfold with each new collaboration and performance, driven by a love for music that transcends boundaries and genres.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d make sure they experience the essence of Los Angeles’ dynamic music scene and cultural landmarks. We’d kick off the week with an evening jazz concert at The Baked Potato in Studio City, known for its intimate setting and stellar performances. Throughout the week, we’d explore iconic venues like The Troubadour and catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl for a quintessential LA experience. During the day, we’d mix in visits to Griffith Observatory for stunning city views and cultural spots like The Getty Center for art appreciation. Dining would include local gems in Venice Beach and Downtown LA’s Arts District, savoring the city’s diverse culinary offerings. It’s about blending music, culture, and cuisine to showcase the vibrant spirit of LA during their visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Frank Gambale and Jimmy Haslip have been incredibly encouraging and influential figures in my life, both musically and personally. Frank Gambale, renowned for his work with Chick Corea and his outstanding solo career, has not only inspired me with his technical prowess and musical innovation but has also provided me with invaluable guidance and support. His approach to guitar playing and his dedication to his craft have profoundly shaped my own musical path.

Jimmy Haslip, a top bass player and a founding member of the Yellowjackets, has also been a significant mentor. His expertise and experience in the music industry, along with his willingness to share his knowledge, have been instrumental in my development as a musician. Both Frank and Jimmy have shown me the importance of perseverance, creativity, and staying true to one’s artistic vision.

I must also recognize the unwavering support of my parents. From a young age, they encouraged my passion for music and provided me with the resources and emotional backing needed to pursue my dreams. Their belief in my abilities and their constant encouragement gave me the confidence to take bold steps in my career, including my decision to move from the North West of England to America.

The journey to where I am now has been filled with challenges and sacrifices, but the mentorship, love, and encouragement from these remarkable individuals have been the foundation of my success. Their influence has been a constant source of inspiration and motivation, and I am deeply grateful for their contributions to my story.
