We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel de Leon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriel, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It all started when I was but a mere child. I, alongside my brother, was raised under a very musical household. A lot my beginnings were thanks to my father, a musician by profession, and the guidance from my very supportive mother. So much of my early experience as a musician came from all sorts of performances from jazz festivals to charity events. I gradually developed my love for the trade by not only performing but learning to compose, arrange and produce for myself. From then, I realized that this was my calling. I had so many interests in other fields such as physics, linguistics and soccer, but nothing called to me more than music did.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There is no easy way to explain how tough it has been. Leaving Malaysia was certainly not an easy decision, but it’s something that I will value for the rest of my life. All the emotions of not being able to fit in and failure constantly taunted me. However, that ten thousand mile leap was something that I felt like once I made it, there was no turning back. It was a major game changer in my life that I knew I needed and I’m glad that I had the emotional and financial backing from my family and friends to help support this dream.

Opening up to the possibility to moving countries was the key to unlocking the expansion of my human and musical experience. Meeting thousands of people who come from different cultures, backgrounds and mindsets has certainly made a big impact on me. It has shaped the way I see life, and in turn, the way I perceive music. Being open minded, accepting and pragmatic simultaneously add to the mixture of who I have become in the past 4 years since I moved to the United States. Being from that little country in the corner of the Southeast Asian mainland, Malaysia, has in turn brought a chunk of authenticity and uniqueness to my personal brand. The respect, hospitality and diligence of a Malaysian translates through my work and I am glad to say I have found my feet here, whilst still embracing my roots.

I like to think of things realistically – if there’s no goal in mind, it would be hard for me to feel like going anywhere. I’ve always wanted to better myself, improve every day and have fresh goals. Ask anyone I know, one of the first few things they’ll tell you is that I sometimes work a little too hard. Whether that’s for better or for worse, only time will tell but I think I’m pretty much still on course. Despite all that, I try to keep a cool head, stay on my compass and just keep going. You have no idea how grateful I am for the people who surround me daily. They’re the ones who keep me sane and if I had to choose one thing that has kept me goal-driven all these years, it’s been all of these people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A couple of weeks ago, my aunt who lives out here in SoCal (shoutout to Auntie Susan!) took me and my cousin out to Solvang in the Central Coast of California. That had to be one of my most unique experiences ever in California, let alone in the US. The nature of the town and its roots captivated me and the food and atmosphere were just phenomenal. I’m not too much of a “we have to do something outdoors at all time” type of person, but as long as we get to spend time together, that’s important to me. I’d recommend to anyone reading this to maintain that human connection between you and all your loved ones!
