We had the good fortune of connecting with Lu Lu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lu, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because I wanted to find personal fulfillment and recognition for my unique contributions. When I worked as a lawyer, I often felt my efforts were undervalued. My role involved drafting contracts, offering legal advice, and maintaining the company’s intellectual property. However, the work was repetitive and unfulfilling for me. Despite my efforts, my contributions were rarely acknowledged, and my name was never mentioned during product launches or project completions. The legal team often only received attention when something went wrong, which was disheartening.
I realized I needed a career where I could see the impact of my work and receive recognition for my individual efforts. In the artistic field, I find immense satisfaction in seeing my name on the screen and knowing that my unique input is valued. Every time I see my name during a screening, I’ll scream and applaud myself. It’s a way of celebrating my achievements and recognizing my hard work. This drive for personal recognition and the desire to contribute uniquely to a project is why I chose to pursue an artistic career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I enjoy using audio to create immersive worlds in storytelling. When the audience feels they are in the same world as the characters, it’s easier for them to relate emotionally. I only work on stories that resonate deeply with me, drawing inspiration from my own experiences.
Recently, I worked on an animation called “Wild Animal,” set in Inner Mongolia, where I originally come from. When I met the director and saw the storyboard, I was instantly transported back to my childhood. The winds of Inner Mongolia are unique—you can even hear the snow and sand hitting your face due to their power. I used different kinds of winds, including distorted wind for the most intense moments, to build the background and the emotional arc of the story. Achieving something both the director and I liked was challenging, but the process was incredibly rewarding.
My journey in sound design and mixing began with the documentary “A Proper Education.” As the sole member of the sound department, I faced the challenge of capturing high-quality sound in noisy public spaces and one-take scenarios. I meticulously recreated the background ambiance for each scene to maintain the narrative’s authenticity. Being present during filming allowed me to understand each subject intimately, facilitating seamless communication with the director and enhancing the storytelling experience.
Since then, I’ve worked on various narrative films, animations, and game projects. Each project teaches me something new. One key lesson I’ve learned is to embrace uncertainty and let go of perfectionism. Finding the right audio materials is like thrifting; the unexpected often works best. I hope to share my unique experiences and emotional connections with different sounds with the world. When I get emotional because of sounds, I track back to understand what is working in me, and I want to share those experiences with the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, I would love to give a shoutout to several key influences in my journey.
First and foremost, I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to my mentors from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. They are not only great educators but also incredibly patient, never minding the numerous questions I’ve asked. The resources available at the school are unparalleled, providing everything I need to learn and grow. The education system at USC is designed for those who are eager to explore and learn, even if they don’t have a specific goal in mind yet. This environment has allowed me to gain skills in various areas like visual effects, sound design, cinematography, and editing documentaries, while working with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds all over the world.
Secondly, I want to acknowledge my mother, who, despite not fully understanding what I do, has always been supportive and happy for me. Her unwavering belief in my happiness and passion has been a constant source of encouragement.
Lastly, I’d like to recognize the entire network of peers and collaborators in Los Angeles. The opportunity to work with such a diverse group of talented people has continuously inspired me and pushed me to grow as a filmmaker. Their different visions and backgrounds have enriched my learning experience and have been instrumental in shaping my creative journey.
To all these amazing people and influences, I extend my deepest gratitude. Their support, encouragement, and inspiration have been vital to my journey, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
