We had the good fortune of connecting with Lanyi Gao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lanyi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because it allows me to explore and express complex ideas and emotions that are often difficult to convey through other means. Art has been a powerful tool for me to reflect on personal experiences, cultural influences, and social issues. It enables me to communicate with others on a deeper level and contribute to conversations about identity, empowerment, and human connection. Artistic expression is not only a passion but also a way for me to contribute meaningfully to the world around me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is deeply rooted in my personal narrative and cultural background. Growing up as a post-90s Asian woman with unique life experiences, I developed a distinctive perspective on family relationships and femininity. These experiences, combined with societal injustices towards women and significant historical events, have profoundly shaped my exploration of feminism, driving me to delve into themes of empowerment, identity, and personal growth.
The ‘Greeting Cards’ series stands out through its integration of mixed media, such as oil painting and silk screen printing, to balance social critique with sarcasm. By reimagining My Melody, a 1990s Sanrio cartoon character, I create a playful yet poignant dialogue that transforms the grief of gender inequality into positive energy, highlighting the complexities of womanhood.
As an extension of the ‘Greeting Cards’ series, the ‘Secret Garden’ features intimate color palettes combined with surreal forms within abstract landscapes. This approach allows viewers to delve into my inner world, processing emotions and confronting fears, desires, and vulnerabilities. The series, exploring women’s struggles and the role of female identity, while also reinterpreting Impressionist paintings.
The journey has not been easy. At 26, I moved from a comfortable life in China to New York, defying societal expectations to settle down and start a family. This bold move required resilience and determination. Overcoming language barriers, cultural differences, and the pressures of establishing myself in the competitive art world taught me the importance of patience and perseverance.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the significance of authenticity in my work. Staying true to my vision and voice, even when faced with external pressures, has allowed my art to resonate deeply with others. Building a supportive community of mentors and fellow artists has been crucial, providing guidance and inspiration throughout my journey.
My art celebrates the strength and diversity of female experiences, transforming personal reflections into universal dialogues. Through my work, I aim to contribute to ongoing conversations about identity, empowerment, and the human condition.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d take them to Brooklyn Heights, a charming neighborhood filled with interesting bookstores, galleries, and delightful eateries. We’d start the day exploring unique bookshops and art galleries, then enjoy some gourmet snacks from local cafes. In the afternoon, we’d relax under the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge with an ice cream, soaking up the sun and the stunning views. A stroll through a flea market would be a perfect way to end the day, discovering vintage treasures and local crafts. This itinerary captures the essence of Brooklyn’s vibrant and artistic spirit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my journey, there are several individuals and influences that have played pivotal roles. I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, whose unwavering support and belief in my artistic pursuits have been a constant source of strength. Growing up in an East Asian household without a direct maternal presence gave me unique experiences and perspectives on family relationships. This absence significantly shaped my exploration of feminism and how I formed my values without a direct female guide.
Additionally, I owe a debt of gratitude to the mentors and fellow artists who have inspired and guided me along the way, shaping my artistic vision and fostering my growth. Among the artists who have profoundly influenced me are Sophie Calle, Louise Bourgeois, and Giacometti. Their work has been a source of inspiration, and their impact on my artistic journey has been invaluable.
