We had the good fortune of connecting with Yoshio Kohashi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yoshio, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Well, I’m still in the middle of my career, so I can’t say for sure, but for me, the most important lesson I’ve learned is, “There’s no night without a morning.”

I’m sure we have been through many tough times and sometimes felt it was impossible to get out of a crisis. However, if you really want something, you shouldn’t give up. This phrase might be misleading, though. It’s certainly important to know when to step back if necessary for your business and career decisions, but don’t give up on your big picture. Even if you lose everything, as long as you hold on to your fundamental desire, I believe you can fight against this cruel world. 😉

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider my work to have more of a craftsman’s quality rather than being pure art. Essentially, I believe that film is a medium for collective entertainment, designed to entertain 95 out of 100 viewers. The remaining 5 viewers are the ones who find joy in a medium like art. However, I am delighted if the audience sees the work I’ve been involved in as art.

So, in response to the question of what sets me apart from others, well, I felt the opposite. I constantly think about how I can create expressions that allow people to share the same space and emotions. The most exciting moments for me are those during editing when I suddenly feel how much my skills support the project.

Reaching my current professional status can be attributed to either my persistence or my stubbornness, depending on how you look at it. It certainly wasn’t easy, but honestly, it’s hard for me to say. What I can say is that being passionate about my work played a significant role in overcoming challenges. If I had always viewed my work as difficult, I probably wouldn’t be in my current situation.

If there’s a lesson to be learned, it might be to accept that all actions are your responsibility and result and to always act accordingly. Of course, reaching this mindset takes time, but ultimately, accepting it allowed me to move forward.

What I want the world to know about me is the joy of conveying stories and narratives to people. Without this, I believe the bonds between people cannot deepen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my ideal friend visited, I would love to go cycling and explore different places together. We could start the day with breakfast at Breakfast Republic in Culver City, then ride along Ballona Creek Bike Path and continue to the beach cycling path, taking breaks at the beach and cycling through Palos Verdes. Although conquering the steep hills in Palos Verdes might be challenging, the stunning views on sunny days make it worthwhile! It would be great to take a break there and have lunch at a nice spot.

Unfortunately, none of my close friends are enthusiastic cyclists willing to ride for more than two hours, which is a bit of a problem. 🙁

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be in this position without my parents’ support and belief in my dream. I am also grateful to the people who trust in my talents and passion and have worked with me up to this moment.
