We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryland Shelton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryland, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Compassion. I think that matters most. It’s more than just tolerance – I see compassion as the acknowledgment and enrichment of someone else’s situation and goals. You’re using your humanity, your strengths as a human being to elevate others. And, big or small, that’s what moves the world forward.
What should our readers know about your business?
It is extremely gratifying to me to maintain my reputation as coach with intuitive, highly individualized practices for each of my clients. Coming to each session with my ears up and my brain in full problem-solving mode makes for intense workdays, but I wouldn’t want it any other way, and I’m confident that’s how I earn the loyalty or trust I do from my clients. Operating your own business is challenging in ways that I don’t know anyone really prepares you for. Creating a one of a kind level of service, and then adapting that service to remote learning without slowing down – keeping the work valuable to clients, keeping their development as my top priority, enriching not just place-holding – that’s all incredibly important and it’s all just part of the constant mental dedication to this work that I feel.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big fan of museums, and naturally so is my best friend. So we’re definitely going to hit up the Natural History Museum, do one of their First Fridays there after we enjoy the Butterfly House. I recently was introduced to the Culver City Steps, which are intensely hard but so worth it and honestly I can’t believe I haven’t been there before in my thirteen years in LA. So we’re going there, too. We’re going to hit the beach a few times, in popular spots (like Will Rogers and El Matador) and hidden spots (which of course, I cannot tell you). We’re going to KBBQ at Soot Bull Jeep and our clothes may never not smell like bulgogi again, but it will be worth it. We will also be hitting up Guelaguetza and spending hour-long brunch listening to live music and working our way through table sized tlayudas and gallons of cafe de olla. And no one I love can leave LA without a day at the Tar Pits. It’s not allowed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out to my vocal coaching mentor, Libby Lavella, the woman who said “hey, I think this is something you would be really good at”; and my clients for continuing to push the imagination and innovation of my technique.
