Meet Diana Kuanysh | Film Director & an Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Kuanysh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age, I was always a creative and talented child, constantly engaging in artistic activities. My fascination with filmmaking began when I saw the editing process of a music video. I immediately fell in love with it and started creating my own music videos and short films with friends. By the age of nine, I knew I wanted to become a film director.
Throughout this journey, my parents and family have been my biggest supporters. They encouraged my passion and provided the resources I needed to explore and develop my skills. I chose this path because filmmaking is a universal language that allows you to convey powerful messages and emotions. It’s a tool that can bring your vision to life on the big screen and connect with people on a profound level.
Art and creativity have always been integral parts of my life. I have been involved in making handmade crafts, assisting friends and family with creative projects, singing, playing instruments, and, most importantly, making films. Each of these activities has contributed to my growth as an artist and a storyteller.
One of my most memorable experiences was directing a documentary for my dad. The film addressed his life journey and everything that was important to me and him. Seeing the audience’s reaction reinforced my belief in the power of storytelling. This experience solidified my commitment to using my creative talents to make a positive impact.
I graduated from the New York Film Academy with a bachelor’s degree in filmmaking. During my time there, I created documentaries, music videos, and short films, some of which won awards at film festivals. This educational experience and the recognition I received have been pivotal in shaping my career and honing my craft.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the endless possibilities in the world of filmmaking. I aim to continue telling stories that resonate with audiences and exploring new ways to innovate and inspire through my work. I believe that with dedication, passion, and the support of loved ones, dreams do come true.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of my dedication, passion, and the belief that dreams do come true. While I may not yet be a well-known figure with a portfolio of acclaimed works, I take immense pride in my journey and the milestones I’ve reached. I am grateful for my perseverance and determination, which kept me going despite numerous challenges.
My journey has not been easy. Initially, I faced significant obstacles due to gender biases and my young age. However, my unwavering faith in myself, my passion, and my big dreams propelled me forward. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to be a filmmaker and storyteller, and that conviction helped me navigate the rough patches.
What sets me apart is my mindset and resilience. I have always believed in staying true to myself and my vision. Although I experience doubts like everyone else, the support and encouragement from the people around me, especially my family and friends, have been instrumental. One moment that stands out is when my cousin told me, “If only you could look at yourself with my eyes.” This reminder of my worth and potential has been a constant source of motivation.
I’ve learned that after every storm comes a rainbow. Friends and family are invaluable sources of support, and ultimately, you are the one who can instigate change and progress. I want the world to believe in the power of goodness, to bring out the best in themselves and those around them, and to always listen to their hearts. You can overcome any challenge if you truly desire it.
My film “Under the Willow,” based on my parents’ love story, is a testament to my journey and achievements. It represents the culmination of my hard work, passion, and the incredible support I’ve received. It is a story of love, perseverance, and the power of dreams, and it symbolizes everything I aspire to convey through my art.
I believe that we can share kindness everywhere, especially through the messages conveyed in our art. My ultimate goal as a filmmaker is to make people care and inspire change. Every film has the power to raise questions, challenge worldviews, and motivate positive transformations. Through storytelling, I aim to ignite empathy, provoke thought, and encourage action.
