We had the good fortune of connecting with Amahd Bey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amahd, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Around the time I graduated high school, I had a very hard time trying to figure out what I wanted to do. In college, I was always more drawn to my English classes and studying famous literature. I knew writing was something I liked to do, and was a journalist for our club sports teams. However, It wasn’t until I took a creative writing class, and a film studies class , that I realized my passion and interest is in creative writing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a poet and love the art of story telling. A lot of what I write about consist of emotions I’ve felt due to the experiences I’ve had. Growing up, emotion and feelings were rarely nurtured, so I used my writing to try and explore myself while coping with life. I believe my attention to detail in word choice and the way I frame any narrative sets me apart from most people. I can talk about so many different perspective’s that it naturally comes off as understanding and relatable. Although I’m proud of my art, I didn’t think people would appreciate it the same way as I did so it deterred me from putting it out into the world. However I finally got over that hurdle and put myself out there and it has been going great for me so far.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to be responsible for your week in LA, on Monday I would suggest going on a hike, chill and then grab dinner at salsa and beer in NoHo. Tuesday, I would say to spend the day at the beach, either Santa Monica or Venice, and vibe out until happy hour at Cabo Cantina in the evening. Wednesday I would suggest a movie and then wings from American deli, and to relax for the weekend. Because on Thursday, we’re going to broad way bar with Hood Fantasy. Friday we’re going out to the Delphi and the Vuuka for after hours with Briggs, Dell, Ka’ron and the deepend. And then Saturday we’re going to the room in Hollywood. To finish the trip, brunch either at the Blaqhouse in NoHo or 1212 in Santa Monica
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people, but a short list includes my parents, siblings, frat brothers, and close friends. Especially Ka’Ron, Skooder and Dell.
